Ballard #3 PG serial #36518

On pages 125-6 of John Dutcher's ballard book he discusses the #3 PG. He specifically mentions a rifle bearing the serial number 36518. I have the buttstock and buttplate from this rifle. Somehow the wood got seperated from the rest of the rifle. I would be interested in finding/buying the rest of the rifle. If someone comes forward and has the rest of the rifle, and is looking for the original wood, I would consider selling the buttstock and plate to help bring the rifle back together again.
Leads to the owner of the rifle would be appreciated.

Have you contacted John Dutcher? He probably knows who's gun that was. Some owners didn't want their info revealed, so it was left out in his book, but his notes will have it.
His contact info is at his web site:

I, for one, would be interested to hear if the rifle and wood ever get back together.  Please, keep us posted.

40-82 Hepburn,

You got my interest- went to my Gun software and looked up the serial numbers on all my Ballards, but didn't find a match! Keep us posted as I sure would like to see the rifle re-united.  Richard

This is a very interesting saga, I had that wood sitting on a shelf for about 8 years and reading about the PG configuration caught my interest. It never occurred to me to check the stock I had. I was pretty shocked to find that I had in my posession the wood from the rifle mentioned in the book. I will certainly post any progress that's made in re-uniting the wood to the gun.
For nyone who might be interested, Dave Crossno made a pattern from this stock, so if you'd like this stock in this configuration he can fix you up. His # is 405-396-8786.

Good story developing here, just maybe you will get lucky! I bet the rifle is sitting in someone's safe, somewhere- hope they are a ASSRA member and read this forum.
I second Dave Crossnos work, he has made several stocks for me.  Richard

Well curiosity got the best of me, so I had to go check my #3F PG to see what the number was. Marlin often built styles of guns in groups so the workers would build maybe 2-3 dozen of one style and not have to change patterns, etc.
Anyway, my Ballard #3F is 16 numbers from your buttstock! Bet everything inbetween was similar. Is your stock plain or checkered? Checkering was an option on the #3F and mine is checkered.

Unfortunately mine is not checkered and the wood appears to me to be just a standard grade. I have a #3 with up-graded wood, I wish the PG had that wood.

I just checked the Dutcher book nd the gun illustrated on page 125 does not appear to have any checkering either.

I think my wood is pretty standard grade also, just the checkering and cheekpiece options.
