Hoch / Donnelly

What would be a fair price for a Shutzen 32-40 on a Hoch action with a C.P. Donnelly 28" heavy barrel? Appears (Claims) to be in excellent+ condition for $1,500.00 + $45.00 shipping.
Would appreciate any knowledgable feed back.

I have a early Hoch and have always liked them. There triggers are (in my opinion) better than Miller/DeHaas. I belive one just sold here on this forum for $1500. But, w/o see it, it would be hard to tell what it's worth.

Hard to find any good Schuetzen rifle at that price.  Hoch made some good actions. There was  a real rough set up on one of his actions for sale in my area, chambered in 30/30 for CBA matches. It sold for over 1500 and need a lot of cleaning up to be presentable. Shot well from what I heard though.

I think I have seen the gun you are talking about at Columbia Schuetzen but can't say for sure.  If it's the same gun been a long time since it was shot. If it is the same gun and Chris is selling it his word is good. Chris sells to promote the sport not for profit

Not the same gun then.  When I was looking at the rough Hoch Dave Farmer answered a few questions for me, he's a nice guy might call if any reservations

I took a look at the rifle. I would say "Buy It" It's very nice looking. Donnely was local to me and his barrels are good (he is dead now). Jim Feren used is barrels. That butt stock is worth at least $600. I think it will be a excellent shooter.

It has been listed on Guns America for quite a spell. Barrel could stand to be a little larger in dia. if one is going to use it for bench work. I would check on the trigger pull length also to see if it fits you as it could be somewhat difficult to shorten. Not familiar with a Donnelly barrel but  Frank shoots with a fellow who owns one, Mr. Jones and he might be able to get some feed back from him.

Forgot to mention a couple of the fellows that I shoot with built up two rifles off of the Hoch action. They used to come in kit form and it took quite a bit of additional machine and hand work to get them both up to par. The fellow that built the rifles, one for himself and one for a friend is a machinist and said it was quite a chore. Not knowing if this is a kit action or a finished action and who might have done the work is also something to take into consideration.

Frank are you talking about the same rifle in the link I provided? I don't see 600.00 in that butt stock and the forearm wood does not seem to match either, or it could be the lighting portrays it as such?

John,
I'm not taking about the forearm. I dislike it's design but, only the butt, the butt stock is well designed and is nicely done. I note that the wood is not fancy.

I just had a stock made for my Hoch (pictured in another thread) I design it and it cost me almost $300 for pattern and stock. I then had to polish the rough butt plate casting, drill and install the butt plate, match the wood to it and do the final shaping and sanding and then apply the finish. I had about 24 hours in it before I was done. If a stock maker could do all that in 1/3 the time at even $60 a hr, that would be $480.

When I went to his shop to do the design work with him, I took my German Schuetzen with me to get some drop measurements. It has a Tyrolean butt stock with checkering and a little (very little) craving. I ask him what it would cost to duplicate just the butt stock. The answer.......... $1500.

So, I am now enlightened can now see dollars in nice butt stocks.  Both good and bad things. Smiley

Regarding the barrel. Jim Feren set the still current 100 shot record with his Donnely barrel and if you check the Coors and ASSRA match results during that time, you'll find that he was rarely beat at the bench with it and was never out of the top 3 off the bench at his worst.

I have decided against the purchase. better to "invest" (spend) the money on developing the Ruger. It has more potential than about anything else out there.
I have enough 'gee whiz' guns already.
