44-77 brass question
Dec 12th, 2011 at 3:57am
Print Post
Had some cases dropped into my lap the other day. Measurements indicate 44-77 Sharps and/or Remington.

It's one piece brass (not the steel head/brass bodied version produced at one time by Remington), balloon head, central flash hole, and the base of the rim has  a fair radius tapering toward the primer pocket (definitely not a rounded bevel). There is no head stamp or other marking present.

Any ideas who made them?

Frank,

Heres the best I can get from my POS camera. I tried to resize them down some, but it's one of those days.

I have at least one case that has that same style head and w/o any markings. It's a 32/30 Remington cartridge. No idea of the maker but, was guessing Remngton or Peters.

Thanks Frank, it's a better starting point than I had.

BP,
I looked through all my old BP cartridges and the 32/30 is the only one that I have w/o a headstamp. So it would be interesting to find out what company or companys made them that way. I bought it over 15 years ago from a cartridge collector at a gun show. I never see any collectors at gun shows any more but, if I can find one, I'll sure talk to him about it.

Post the dimensions of your cases ...

If the cases are:
0.439 Bullet diameter
2.250 length
0.458 Neck diameter
0.512 Shoulder diameter
0.516 Web
0.635 Rim Diameter
0.082 Rim Thickness
They are 11.15x58R (43 Spanish), usually made by UMC which are similar to the 44-77 Sharps-Remington, also made by UMC
0.446 Bullet diameter
2.250 length
0.467 Neck diameter
0.502 Shoulder diameter
0.516 Web
0.625 Rim Diameter
0.082 Rim Thickness

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

I've got a bunch of old .43 Spanish cases that I used to make ammo for my .44-77 SBN in my Roller. Most are marked, but some look like what you've shown.
