38-55 best powder selections
Nov 13th, 2011 at 8:43am
Print Post
I've just sent my CPA action back to the company for a Badger 38-55 barrel.  What are the best powder choices for the caliber.  I've seen J Louis' posts and pictures using the new 300MP powder but that seems to be impossible to get in my area (northern New England).  What other powders are comparable using both the 250 grain and 300+ grains bullets?  Barrel twist will be 1-15".

Thanks.

The standard is either 4759 or 4227. Both work well 4227 meters better in most measures. If you have a B&M measure use it on the 4759 and it will work well.

2nd 40 Rod.

38/55 is on the fence between the two powders. 45/70 4759 is the clear choice 32/40 it's 4227  Either one in the 38/55 .

If you go 4759 use a B&M measure and weigh every load.  4227 no need to weigh.

Rich Powder Valley and Graf & Sons are both good source's for the 300MP if you would like to give it a try.

Has anyone developed any loads with 4227 and 310gr bullets, or heavier? If so, could you share your load info and results? Thanks.

A old match winning load from the 70's through the 80's is 18.5 gr 4759 with a BSed 290 - 300 gr bullet. try with any primer but, make sure one of them is a 2 1/2 Rem.
