2400 powder in 45-70 trapdoor

I am trying out some smokeless loads for the local indoor range. Loaded 2400 powder from 20 to 24 grains in 1 grain increments. 405 grain lee hollow base bullet. Rem 9 1/2 primers.

Had convinced my self 24 grains was too much for a trapdoor. Was going to pull bullets and reload. Then read back through several pages here last night. Saw referenced to 24 grains as a good load for trapdoors. Guessing pressure around 25,000. Maybe it is safe for a trapdoor.

Don't want to start an argument here. Just looking to confirm others use 24 grains or there abouts of 2400 for a trapdoor.

How low can I go?

Recommend another smokeless powder for a trapdoor?

Hi Jimmy.

One of our oldest shooters here in my area gave me that load many years ago. 24 gr IMR 2400, no wad.  He told me it was easy to remember = 24 of 2400.

I've never tried the load.  Have never used 2400 in anything.  Think starting at 22 gr would be a good idea.  Just remember, dont use a wad.

A fellow at the Range in Poulsbo ringed the chambers in two rifles using 2400 with a wad.

I always feel safer using BP in a trapdoor.

Good luck.     Joe.

I have shot the 325gr. RCBS cast from lynotype sized 458 with 21 gr. 2400 & 32gr. 4198. in both my Uberti highwall and H & R trapdoor. I have found these loads to be consistantly accurate wirthout desroying my shoulder. They did"nt do well in an original trapdoor that shot well with Lyman 457124 pure led unsized with blk. If gun is original stick with the blk. shoot another gun indoors.

Also the new 2400 should not be used to the old loads it makes higher pressures. I have shot 2400 with cast since I started reloading 1960

2400 is one of the most useful smokeless powders in trapdoors.  My absolute favorite and accurate loads for 300/325 grain bullets is 18 grs. 405 grain bullets like 24/2400 as was suggested. If you are long range (500yd+) or just plain masochistic go back down to 20/22 grains and a 500 gr bullet. The real limiting factor is how much your body can take in recoil. Unique with the lighter bullets at about 12/13 grs has been a good load. There are also many combinations of 3100, 4227, 4759 and a few others. Find what your TD likes for accuracy and have some fun.
