Kurt,
Thank you very much for your pictures.

Would it be possible to get the thickness of the insert, the width of the side dovetail and the distance between the keeper forks?

Here is a drawing that I made for a friend. He built a sight out of Lyman 17A.  If you need addition dimensions let know.

The tricky part was silver soldering the round nut in the channel.
Aperture thickness = .053
I bought some new apertures from the old Riflesmith they = .047.
Distance between clip arms = .424
I also have a windguage Stevens front sight ( 7/16 dt) and a Ballard. They are mounted on rifles. Let know if you want pics.

Kurt,  the way I made them in the past was to thread a piece of drill rod and screw it into the base where you soldered your round nut. Then drill through it and thread. Round off the top with a file. I think thats how the originals were made.

Here is my version of a 17A windgage. The spring takes out all back lash, the screw is a 4x40.

I've got one too Joe! Always thought it might possibly have been there too. Mine is #1 Sporter, .44-77 bottleneck, with SST, and 34" heavy barrel, no tang sight holes.
Just figured if a guy was a buffalo hunter, it would have possibly been a good choice!

Neat MG!

Mine is a 40/70 BN, SS trigger. Heavy 28" octagon barrel.  It's #1 sporter too.  Going to have to get some pictures.
