Original front sights

I thought I'd start a new thread for this and not muddy the Maynard one.

I would like to know what the difference is between the Winchester, Marlin Ballard and the Stevens front sight is. I have two of them. One I call a Stevens and the other I think may be a Winchester but, I really don't know for sure about either. They are different though. The insert keeper will not work on both and the inserts are narrower on one.

Pictures of the differences and measurements would be greatly appreciated.

They all have numerous different front sights. You would need photos to identify specific sights. They also used other manufacturers sights as options with different applications for different sights. Nick Stroeble has a very good refernce book on metalic sights and scopes that is very helpful.

Thanks Slumlord, I do have Stroebles book but, they are all so similar that it's hard to tell the difference without good pictures or dimensions such as dove tail widths of the windgage slides and other things.

Good idea. I think a book with sight dimensions would sell really well.

I also wish there was a better reference. Strobels is helpful and I have learned a lot over the years through experience but it is still often difficult to identify a particualr sight. I have a Lyman windage adjustable tang sight that matches nothing in any reference that I can find.

Slumlord44,

Can you post a picture or two of it?

First I would have to find it. Not sure if I put it on a gun or it is in my sight drawer. Then I will have to remember how to post the photos here. Have photobuckt set up on my cell phone so if I take a photo on the cell camera it automaticly goes to photobucket. That simplifies one part. My cell camera actualy takes prety good photos. Will see what I can do.

One thing is for sure; Win. and Marlin both standardized on a 3/8" dovetail, but Stevens had other sizes besides 3/8". I've owned Stevens with dovetails both larger and smaller than the std. 3/8".

Some early Remingtons used the same larger front dovetail found on the earlier Stevens.

How early? I've got some very early Rolling Block sporters and they are 3/8 dovetails.

Val,

Mostly find the larger front dovetail on E Remington & Sons marked barrels. The #2's (with the metal forearm tip) occassionally have the larger dovetail on Remington Arms Co marked barrels as well.

I have a very early Remington rolling block rifle. Not drilled for a tang sight. Not rebated, long lower tang.

It has the large dovetail for the front sight.

The only rifle I have that might have killed a buffalo.

I've got one too Joe! Always thought it might possibly have been there too. Mine is #1 Sporter, .44-77 bottleneck, with SST, and 34" heavy barrel, no tang sight holes.
Just figured if a guy was a buffalo hunter, it would have possibly been a good choice!
