Tapered bore Drilling

Hi Guys, it's been a little while. Will just say meds and let it go at that, I'm back. While not a trapdoor, (am I allowed to talk about something else?) I have a nice side hammer Drilling. Rifle barrel caliber is 8X58R Sauer.  The bore starts out at the chamber mouth as .323. It exits the muzzle as .311. I made brass from 9.3X72R Sauer. I'm using some of my 32-40 bullets, 165 to 185. It doesn't appear to be very load sensitive. Might this be because of the taper bore? I've never seen anything similar, bore wise. As far as I can determine, it is not just choked, but is indeed a taper from breech to muzzle. Any thought or ideas. Thanks guys.

Hi Dick, welcome back.

Are you saying that the bore tapers or the groove or both? What are the bore and groove sizes at the breech and muzzle? Is the twist even or gain?

And a picture would make us all very happy Smiley

There was some interest in tapered bores in Germany in the 1920s & 1930s.  Most was military interest, but some of the experiments might have led to an 8 mm tapered bore Drilling.  The Germans made some pretty complicated jacketed bullets for sporting rifles.

My Lancaster rifle in .360 2 1/4" BPE is tapered in both the bore and grooves (oval bore) by about .010" breech to muzzle.

Don't know if my photo skills are up for this kind of pix, but will try. For openers, It appears to be a straight, even taper with equal lands and grooves. with the interest here, I'll dig a little deeper.

We have seen taper bores, but how is it done? My only experience is a square bit reamer with a wood backing. The wood wears just slightly from breech to muzzle. Several passes will give a few thousands taper. A springy rifling cutter will sort of follow the bore. This does not seem practical for production.

I'm working on getting some pictures of the bore, but no promises. I did re-slug the breech, actually did a chamber cast on that end and ran a slug into the muzzle. Same results, .323 at chamber mouth and .311 at the muzzle.I did forget one item when I described it before. The rifling, I'm not sure what to call it, is like a rail road track. Instead of equal lands and grooves, there are two lands in the same width as the groove. Like I said, a railroad track. If I can't get a good picture of the gun itself, I might slug it and post a picture of the slug. You can then see the double land scenario. ANYHOW, it shoots beautifully.  I reworked a couple of boxes of 9.3X72R Sauer cases and use my 32-40 lead bullets. Great old gun.

Hi Dick. Dont know what kind of bore picture you're trying to take. I did these with my digital camera.  Messing around one day.

Your rifling description sounds like Zimmerman?  The two brothers from New York.  Zimmerman?  Geesh, must be slippin. Cant remember.  Zettler!  Barny and Billybob Zettler!

OK Joe I'll try for some pix like that. Did you use a back light? Anyhow, on the top picture you posted, move each of the narrow lands close together in sets of two and this is about it. I'll see if I can find some pictures of the gun itself too. It's really neat. Later guys.

Lay'd a white piece of paper on the floor for back light Dick.  Think my camera was set to Macro, no flash.
