I've heard of wide lands with a groove down the middle, first time I've seen one or a photo of one!  Thanks.

The focus isnt perfect on Dick first pictures. So, cant really tell exactly what the shape is.

The rifling looks like the four groove rifling in my Stahl rifle. In that barrel, the tops of the lands look like they have been cut concave. Hard to explain. The radius on the land tops, look smaller than the bore radius.  When a bullet is pushed through the barrel it sorta looks like it has eight sharp lands.

Hey Joe, were you being part way serious about zettler?
Anyhow, in researching the Drilling, if I'm close on the German proofs, this was the first weapon proofed in 1905. Like many nitro proofed it has Krupp barrels in it and my dear wife come from Krupp lineage. I'm glad to have shared this rifling type, but would still like to learn more about it, so if anybody does, don't be shy like I am.

Yep.  I couldnt remember the name till the end of the post.  Barney And Charlie Zettler were the names. Gunsmiths from NY back in the real Schuetzen days. They made percussion schuetzens and made custom breechloading schuetzen rifles. They did make complete rifles of there own design.

They recut a rifle barrel by cutting another groove in the lands of an existing barrel.  I've never seen one myself and think they may be rare.  Would sure love to see one.

Would you like to see the rifling in my Stahl?  Can take a picture if you like.

Neat Joe, thanks. If you look at the second picture it is clearer. Will try to get better. The cut lands are equal in width and very flat cut. And yes, I'd like to see the Stahl. I gave Whitey Hanson a pair of M'L side by side barrels, rifle shotgun combo, with the rifle's rifling resembling a ratchet. Don't know if I still have pictures. Very unusual. If he still has them maybe he'll post some pictures. Later. Dick

Hey Joe, this is very similar in configuration. The only difference is that the Drilling rifling is much more square topped. I'll try and get a better picture.

#2. While the picture isn't as good overall the square tops are more visible.

Your rifling looks more like an extra groove in the land like you said Dick.   Noticed your bore doesnt have those  craters and crusty moon landing areas like mine.

Could have been the same barrel maker.  The old Stahl, even with the rough bore will still lay them right in there.

That last picture shows the sharp edge of the small groove in the land. Wink

Joe, with age, both it and mine, there are sure to be a few rough edges, but like yours, this is a shooter. What make it nice is that when set for the rifle, not only does the rifle sight pop up, the the rifle (right) trigger is single set. Push it forward and "touch" it off. Oh almost forgot, it also has a "pop-up" tang sight. Neat, huh?
