Winchester windgauge sight inserts

Hi,

I have two original Winchester single shots. A left handed Special Single Shot (after purchasing this one I found that the rifle is actually in Campbell's second book!), and a later single shot with a really nice close coupled double set trigger.  I'd like to shoot this one more but don't have suitable inserts for the windgauge sights (I have one aperture but it's too small).   Interestingly the inserts for the older rifle are a tiny bit thicker and do not fit the later rifle.  (I bought an insert card from MVA for their "Winchester" sights but they are only about 0.012" thick and the shape is such that they wouldn't fit anyway).  The inserts that fit this rifle are 0.042" thick.  I was surprised to find that the inserts were not interchangeable between the two rifles.

Any thoughts?   I'd really like to keep the original sights on the rifle.

thanks,

Chris.

I have found inserts don't often interchange.  In fact keep a small plastic compartment box with inserts for 6 different front sight's.  2 Germans 2 Americans, Redfield and Lyman, and two brands reproduction tangs

My Mike Stevens front takes inserts much thicker than MVA's found I can stack 3 MVA inserts and use them in the Stevens front.  Far as I know your only option is try and fit.

You may try to find inserts made by Axtel or Parts Unknown Winchester front sights.  Their inserts were thicker like the originals.  I have both and they will interchange but one is tighter. A stroke or two with a jewelers file should make them work. Problem is, neither is still made. As Boats said, try doubling up the MVA's. Some have taken the heavy post and removed it and use it as a filler.  Bob

I have one of the Axtel sets in use on an original Farrow.  Apparently Farrow used Winchester front sights.  IIRC, they fit properly but the Axtel sight holder needed some small amount of file work.  The were quite pricey.

Thanks, I'll try multiple MVA inserts and see what I can do.

Try Distant Thunder. They will make up custom if they don't have a proper fit.

Just as a FWIW, I use the MVA "thin" inserts in my original Winchester sights and once the clip is firmly in place, the thinness seems to make no difference.  Just my experience, but that's the way it works for me!  Smiley
