Stevens Model 45

On a Stevens Model 45 that is marked as such on the front of the action it has  additional marks of an E and an X, any ideas what they stand for?  be? This is a straight griped rifle with a schuetzen butt plate, decent wood good bore and a single trigger. If the EX meant deluxe or something I'm not seeing it, but it is a nice looking Model 45 with a 44 1/2 action.

I seem to remember that X may mean it had been back to Stevens for work. No one ever realy confirmed that though.
