Thanks Mike.  Have seen all the Maynards at halps.   I was assuming Hank wanted to see the Maynard windgauge sight, so thats what I was looking for.

Hank, Is that the sight you wanted to see?

Got a PM from a member who says he's seen half a dozen Maynard windgauge sights on Remington Creedmoor target rifles.

Heres another one.

Hank45! Where are you?  How are we doing on your thread?  Has it been helpful?

If I had a Maynard windgauge sight I would have posted a picture of it for you.  I did the best I could.

Thanks for starting an interesting thread.    Wink

Just for grins, take a quick peek at Stroebel's Old Gunsights book on the BACK outside cover, just to the right of the Pope tang sight.     Wink

It's on the front cover too. I couldnt find any mention of the sight in the text.  Still a heck of a good book. Wished he'd do another one. Updated.

Great thread!

I had never seen a Mass. Arms windgage front sight before - just drawings in old Maynard literature...so I doubted that any still existed. I've seen many of the shimmed Ballard windgage signts on high-grade Maynards and assumed that Maynard normally utilized the shimmed Ballard sights. Over the years, I've had several Maynards come into my hands with the shimmed Ballard front sights - and several with early Remington windgage sights. Remington and Maynard shared that same large dovetail size, but I assumed that those were simplly replacements because they fit - and Maynard sights were practically unobtainable. Lots of stuff was unobtainable in those days before internet searches!  Smiley

I agree XTM, interesting thread.  What befuddles me is the lack of text on a sight thats on the cover of Stroebels book. Front and rear cover. For a long time I thought it was a Pope sight since its paired with a Pope windgauge sight in one of the pictures.  Turns out Pope never made a windgauge sight.  Well, one has never turned up, I should say.

I had the same thoughts, thought I'd never see one.

Joe,

That Pope tang sight does have windage, not in the base, but in the top sort of like the Lyman #47 stem.

BP, I meant to say Pope never made a windgauge (front) sight.

Joe,

My mistake. I'm still glancing at the back cover. Are you referring to the Lyman 144 to the right of the Maynard sight on the front?

On the rear cover, upper right.  Shows a windgauge Pope rear sight and a Maynard windgauge front sight.

Heres whats on the covers of my book, BP.

I find no mention of the Maynard windgauge front sights shown, in the text.

Joe,

Thanks for the pictures. I'm back on track and seeing the same thing. I was starting to wonder if maybe there might have been different editions of the book.

Interesting about the text, Stroebel calls out the front windgauge sight shown in the Maynard 1880 catalog cut (letter G below its base) as a Marlin Windgauge Front Globe Sight.      Huh

And yet the Maynard WG is seen on Remington Creedmoor rifles, not Maynard Creedmoor rifles.    Undecided

Someone knows the answer. Some rifle crank who is not a member of this forum.
