The serial # on the early Stevens is more of an assembly # than a serial #. Impossible to date them from this number. Photos and more info like specifics of Stevens name on the gun and extractor location can somewhat narrow it down but no way that I am aware of to come up with an actual year of manufacture.

I know that Stevens serial numbers don't provide much info but, there has to be some "method to the madness"--this favorite has the 1894 patent date --the 1902--1907 extractor. The extractor somewhat dates the rifle but what I don't understand is the tree digit serial number, knowing that they made thousands of these rifles before 1902.  ledball

de Hass, in his book, says that when the numbers became so  long as to crowd the space on the lower tang, they started a code system featuring a letter along with the number.  He also says he has seen Favorites with different letters in front of the serial number, including one with the letter "Z", which he says would seem to indicate that all letters were used.  Only other thing he mentioned that might help date them is that "about 1904........... the plain extractor was discontinued in the .22 caliber rifles and was replaced with an automatic extractor.............."  He says the plain extractor was retained in the .25 and .32 calibers as well as the .22 and .32 caliber smoothbores.  Hope this might help.

Regards, Joe
