I like Mitchell in Arlington Tx. small shop easy to deal with and not expensive. I get my 32/20's and 38/40's for Lever Actions from them. They are not tailored to individual rifles like  from the custom molds we use for target single shots but actually very good bullets. Better than most home cast. Difference is one size fits all, which is a big difference.

For loads in my Marlin 1895 45/70 use 4759 but have loaded the 45/70 using Unique with good results too. Most of the cowboy guys use something like Trailboss though.

Problem with the 45/70 is getting something accurate that does not kick too bad. Problem I have yet to solve with the 8 lb Marlin. Might be something to Trailboss

Try Hodgens site they have good data on the actual loads

A couple of good loads for 45/70 are,

10 - 12.0 gr Unique with 300 - 500 gr bullets

22 - 24.0 gr 4759 with 400 - 450 gr bullets.
Pistol primers and NO wads in either.

Man! I've been down this road Big Time.

I have an 1885 Winchester HiWall BPCR 45-70. Badger barrel etc.

Have been having a heck of a time getting it to shoot well. I also have a Pedersoli Sharps in 45-70. Everything I try in the HIWay I try in the Sharps. The Sharps shoots everything EXTREMELY well. The HW, not so much.....

I've settled on two bullets...
Lyman 457125 and Lyman 457132....Cast with Lyman #2

For powders I'm using 4759, 5744 and 3031....As I said, everything will shoot under 2" at 200 yds out of the Sharps, but the HW will shoot into 3" and then throw one or two rounds out to 5"......(Both rifles are scoped with 6X William Malcolm scopes) (Groups are five shots)

I've tried using fillers, different lubes, different primers.......I've sized the boolits to .460 down to .457 and everything in between.......

Sharps = Bingo..........Winchester = UGH! Same loads, same day, same guy pulling the trigger.

I think it is the chamber. There is zero lead in the Winchester. Bullets need to be inserted deeply into the cases.

My next step is to do a chamber cast of the Sharps and have a reamer cut to these dimensions and rechamber the HiWall.

Oh, BTW, even the Sharps doesn't like any bullets less than 500g.....

Hope this helps. Let us know how you make out.

Try 29 grains of h4198 with WLR primers.
use any 405 gr cast boolits.
Works for me!
