Shot the silhouette match at Shippensburg today and wiped (1 damp patch) after every shot. Howling wind - steady 20mph with gusts to 40+. But, smoke cleared nicely and mostly sunny. Patching after each shot is the way to go for me. Almost doubled my score from the Sept match (my first at 500m), so think I'm good. Just need a load for the rams. 312gr in the wind goes all over the place.

The winning score was in the low 20s, so everyone was suffering from the 'breeze'.

We shot our club rim fire gong match yesterday few hundred miles south of Shippensburg.  Wind made the difference on Rams for sure.  Be careful though don't load for extreme weather and suffer with too much recoil on the other animals and fine weather matches. Rim fire like I was shooting no options .  Look at ballistic charts on bullets, some are better wind bullets but not by much, chart does not show the effect of complication with special ram loads or additional recoil.

Best strategy is generally to wait the gust out shoot in minimum wind. can't always do it though I lost two rams waiting long as I could then breaking my shot center, strike just off.   Normally I don't crank my rear sight much during a match, yesterday put 3 moa on the sight as the match progressed.  Watch that spotting pad and keep them centered up.

For whatever it's worth, I use windshield washer fluid sprinkled on a patch followed by a dry patch pushed through  with a hickory wiping rod.  When you get used to it, it's pretty fast.

I will be shooting off hand at 200yds with my 71 / 84 Mauser at Bisley next weekend. Black powder is compulsory in "Vintage" events and wiping out during the detail is not allowed. Blow tube is the only option.

Fred,

I seem to have missed you at the Trafalgar?  Pity...   I was there shooting vintage match rifle on saturday and sunday morning. Gorgeous weather!
I also shot blowtubing only, which is no problem at all in British October weather - even if match rifle allows wiping between shots.  Shot pretty well at 200 and 500, 600 OTOH was a disaster...  the wind was doing pretty weird things.
I even blowtubed when shooting at 900, no issues in spite of about 20 shots down the tube.  And the score was pretty decent too...

Hi Gert: The 200yd detail was hopeless: I shot it at 1:45 on the Saturday after our club secretary had shot in the morning. He failed to hit the target with his Snider and only had one scoring shot with his Francotte Martini. The wind was terrible, gusting and changing direction all the time. My first sighter was a three, the second a miss and the detail continued like this. Half way through we had to stop shooting because a stag and a doe charged across the range just below the target number boards. Two minutes later they came back the other way. I finished with a magnificent score of 9, which was good enough for second place as only one other competitor submitted his score card!
Sunday was better: Ishot the 100yd off-hand Rook Rifle on Stickledown butt zero and won it with my .360 no5 Rodda Martini.
Regards,
Fred

Fred,
I see you shot your 200 about he time I shot my 600...  The wind was pretty weird indeed, doing things it was not supposed to;  moreover, at times it was competely different on the firing point and downrange.
The joys of Bisley wind indeed!  I don't have any scores yet, I'll have to be patient...

Joe: Go to (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links) and look down the middle of the home page---you will see the Trafalgar Results heading. It is rather complex--there are 43 pages of results, some comps with many competitors and some with only one or two score cards submitted.
The more popular comps usualyy involve Lee Enfield rifles. 25 years ago you could buy a good SMLE for less than £10, but they fetch real money now.

Hank, none of the above.  Most use a flexible rod with a specially made plastic tip of the right diameter, or a just the end of the rod. or a nylon brush. Use about a 2 1/2" round patch lightly moistioned with about 5-8 parts water to 1 part water soluble cutting oil. Others use everything from antifreeze to vinegar water. Keep the barrel dampness uniform from shot to shot or vertical stringing is guaranteed. Bob

I wipe between shots using a mixture I picked up from some shooters in Iowa.  It's equal parts isopropyl alcohol, distilled water and Murphy's oil soap.
