At least a dozen photos of that rest in Brophy's Springfield book. Some with different adjustment screws and fixing devices. Good photo of a 03 floor plate that's  made in one piece to receive the rest. This one seems to be set up to slide on a rail.   

Would have to speculate were the rest came from. In the o3 book probably some equipment supplier who's rest was altered by the Arsenal to attach to  03's.  If I was going to guess origin of the rest itself is English. Just my guess though.

Joe is there any text data available on the NRA museum rifle pictured.   date, calibre cartridge etc?  Wonder why they call it a Peabody-Martini.  My 7.5 swiss hammerelli stutzen is a dead ringer for that one---minus the rear sight and adjustable buttplate.  Didn't the early DePalma rifles have a built up cork fingertip/palm rest?   That ball looks like built up cork layers to me

scroll down to the items mentioned.  they are all springfield c. 1930 bolt action semi-schuetzen stocked bolt action free rifles used by the USMC.  several sport the cork-ball palm rest there appear to be at least 2 types of cork ball rest one is referred to a a McCutchon-type and another with a Marine Corp type designation

I was surprised that the Lucian Carey rifle was stuck so far back in the pack. I know that we have some different ideas about what makes a rifle, but a rifle of this historical significance should have held a featured place in the auction not stuck behind a bunch of military cast offs and oddities and shotguns.
I guess our seat is at the back of the bus.
