Harrell's Schuetzen Measure

Posted last week asking about Harrell’s Schuetzen measure and pistol powders.  Ended up calling Linwood and asking. He said reports were good and if I did not like it could return.  Two days later it was in my mailbox

Been using one of his Custom 90’s for perhaps 10 years mostly Schuetzen 15 grs or so of 4227, also use it with H335 and Varget for bolt guns.  The 90 is a nice measure well finished and much more precise than anything I had used before. The Schuetzen measure is a big step up in fit feel and finish from the 90. Roller bearings high polish nicer handle and drop tube fitting.  Visually the measure without the bottle is half the size of the Custom 90.  Graduated to 200 on the barrel 1-10 on the knob with half marks.  Between one full graduation is 4 clicks so 800 possible measure settings.

Ran some test this morning.  First a caution I always check weigh measured charges. Only time I throw without checking with the scale is at a match or the range with powders and charges that have been proven extensively in my shop with the scale. Load the exact same cartridges back in the shop I still check weigh even though I trust my table of charges.

Unique was the test and it throws very small charges exactly.   30 on the measure is 2.6 grs of Unique and it repeated  10 times. Went up to my 45acp charge of 5.7 grs and was able to click up and down varying the charge by 1/10 gr.

Now I will be able to vary my 4.5 gr Unique gallery Schuetzen 32/40 load. Or my 8.4 gr Unique 38/40 load.  Was limited due to the measure before.  Tried Hodgon Clays. 3.4 through 4.0 charges with the ability to set any charge between precisely. 4227 went to my standard Schuetzen load, same thing you can set it exactly and it throws reliably. I figure it will handle 22 grs of 4227 max

It's the one to have

Few more things about the Harrell's

Something I have never done before was set up a table of rough charges per graduation on the measure. This to dial in new charges quickly.   For example the factor on 4227 is 9 so If I want 16 grs multiply by 9 and get 144 as the measure setting. Proved this up and down the scale.  Not recommending anybody use a rough factor to load, it’s a quick way to set for weighing and the final measure set up. Ran the factor for 4227 Unique Clays and H 335 and put a note in the measure box.

Now I have to make up my mind on keeping the 90. It's a great 4227 measure. It will also throw Varget between 40 & 50 grs for large bottlenecks like the 30/1906, the Schuetzen measure won't all the way open the chamber is not large enough. 90 does not handle stick powders like 4064 or 4759 well either. I use a Belding and Mull for the old Dupont powders and Black which Linwood does not recommended in his measures.   Might switch over the large modern cases I rarely load to the B&M measure.

Boats I have been using the Harrel Schuetzen measure for several years and as you have stated it is money well spent. When I ordered mine direct for Harrel he refused to take my money until I actually had it in hand and had a chance to use it.

He's a gentleman for sure. Bought my first one after my first Schuetzen match at Charlie Dells range some years ago. I had pre loaded 100 32/40 cases in MTM plastic boxes. Of course one box spilled on the way to the range.  Harrell's shop was about 20 miles from the Range. One of the guys, 40 Rod I think, suggested I go over and get a proper measure.

Some things are just worth what they cost.

There is a nice interview of Harrell,s operation in the September issue of "Precision Shooting".  I have purchased 2 powder measures and a press from them.  I never sent a dime until I had their products in hand. They make good stuff and are excellent to do business with.
