Buffalo clean out of .25 bullets! What now?

BAC has no .25 bullets, no prospects inside of 2 months (per phone conversation yesterday).  Who else is a supplier of 20:1 good quality cast bullets and has them in stock?

What's wrong with the RNFB hardcast 85gr bullets available from several sources? Cheap and accurate.

Mould purchase is definitely in the works for the future.  I have a mould for my .250 Savages, gas check design, and nearby access to a buddy dedicated to casting.

Where I'm at now, however, is to experiment with the High Wall I just acquired, try bullets of different styles and weights, no gas check, and in the 20:1 alloy as is recommended generally (and from good sources with more experience).  Based on those results, and further advice, I may well have a mould built.

I just stumbled on to this company in the CBA forum. They have some very nice bullets to sell that meet our needs. I was very suprised to find the molds that they list.

Maybe we can encourage them to cast in 20/1.

Great source, it would appear!  Thanks!

And they DO cast in 20:1 (at least for some offerings).

Candidates seem to be Lyman 257231 88g in 20:1, (intend to try .257 AND .258 dia).

Another offering is the 257283 (it is 85g), available sized .257-260.

Am I on the right track? (Original High Wall, 25-20 SS)

Spitpatch,

I haven't used it much yet, but some time ago I bought an old specimen of that 257283 mould.  It looks so Hudson-y, I can't imagine that it wouldn't shoot if properly sized and tempered.  A lot depends on your barrel though.  Is it new or original, what groove diameter and twist, etc.  I've got an old high-wall with an original round #3 barrel that is on my to do list for load development, so I'd love to hear about your experiences.   Smiley

Regards,
Froggie

PS  Is there some reason you like 20:1 rather than 25:1?  The latter is my "go to" alloy for beginning load development.   Cool

Green Frog,

20:1 is what I shoot in my BP 45-70's.  It is also what has been more than once recommended for a start with the .25-20 SS, by those who've done it.

This gun is a #3 octagon, 32".  I understand this would be a 14" twist, but I've not verified that yet on my gun.  Bore is excellent.

I will keep track of my trials, and post them as this goes.  Gone for the month of October to hunt in Montana, so may not get to it until I return.

Thanks for your interest.

Frank, do you have a better link address for this bullet company?  Click on the posted link and it connects to netBusiness LLC

Yup... looks like their web site folded up..

Before it did, I emailed them an inquiry about prices for a couple different bullets - and never received a reply. That right there always makes me a little leery.

Really too bad, too, since they had a couple designs that are just about impossible to find anywhere else and it's nice to know if a bullet is going to work before buying a mold.

John Boy, It appears that it's no longer a viable site Sad

No, I don't have anything else for it. Someone PMed me about it more than a week ago and I've had trouble finding the original post on CBA to answer them back.

Hopefully some odered from them after I first posted and can give a phone # or some other helpful info from there invoice.

Paul - Frank, much thanks for the sad news.  When the link first worked, I saw Ideal bullets I would really like to have had.  As for the molds, I salivate to own them

I did business with Bob @ unobtainomite.com for about a year.  He was a great guy with a superb product and a good price.  Disappeared during the late summer.  You might try the company above.  Have had some great success with their products.
