Belding and Mull measure question
Sep 11th, 2011 at 12:05am
Print Post
I just acquired a B&M measure. does not have the measuring "stem"?? is that what it is called?
I have read a couple of places of people buying standard BP muzzle laoder powder measure, the type that you adjust to throw a volume weight down a barrel of a front stuffer.
Can anyone point me to one that fits the B and M? I am guessing the Italian and other manufactured units have different diameters.

Any advice?

Merwin, the measuring tube thingy for the B&M measure is 1/2 inch in diameter. The same part made by MVA is the same diameter. Perhaps they would sell the part separately. You could even buy a piece of 1/2 inch O.D. brass tubing from a hobby shop and fabricate one.

SPOILER ALERT I'm going to tell the "big secret" of how to get the most performance (and cool factor) from your B&M powder measure.  The idea did not originate with me, nor do I take any credit for it, except for bringing it to the attention of some of the schuetzen community. Roll Eyes

The bench rest boys discovered 40 or more years ago that a good volumetric measure gave them winning results, and the B&M design dropped some of the most consistent volumes due to its self-baffled cavity design.  Somebody got the great idea of making a new drop tube using a micrometer head as was/is available from Starrett and which had a shaft size about the same diameter as the plunger in the original drop tubes.  They mounted said micrometer head on the original or a similar sized piece of brass tubing (available from your plumbing supply) and voila' they were cooler than cool and more accurate than most.  Cool

The most serious competition to this set-up was Homer Culver's micrometer conversion of the #5 & #55 Lyman/Ideal measures, which spawned a number of imitators culminating with the release of the Harrell line of purpose-built micrometer powder measures.  Smiley

Thus endeth the lesson!

Here is my version. I made it in the '80's when I bought my first B&M measure w/o the the measuring cavity.

It's made from 1/2 brass stock, reamed 3/8's X 1 1/4 dp, then drilled and taped 1/4 x 20 for the balance of the 3" length and scribed the marks with a height gage. I then made a threaded spindle of 303 SS and attached a Redding thimble as seen.

Top picture shows the lock screw.

When the boys in Pennsylvania re-introduced the B&M they offered a micrometer tube. Not click but has mike engraved barrel and nut.  I check weigh when I set it up however it repeats the same weight of charge for logged settings every time.

I suspect they used a lot of old B&M parts mixed in with whatever new they had to fabricate. Interesting they shipped them in obviously old B&M boxes.  Now I have to save the damn thing since if I ever sell the measure as we all we know cardboard doubles the price. It's on the shelf taking up space with several other very valuable cardboard boxes.
