Lube Clean-up - Bullet Base

How important is it to clean all the lube off the bullet base prior to loading fixed ammo? Does it need to be absolutely clean of all lube (am using SPG) or just a decent wipe good enough. Is there a difference in the need for having a lube-free base between fixed ammo and breech seated? Will eventually migrate to breech loading with the 32/40, so might as well as about both. Thanks.

If your going to shoot the fixed in a short time (within a few days) and it's not stored in a hot area (above 85 - 90 deg) it won't make a difference but, I wouldn't store lubed, fixed for any length of time because of the possibility of the lube migrating into the powder. I don't believe that lube will bother powder until it has a chance for the powder to absorb it. I shot BSed BP using lube as a wad to hold the powder in the case for years. So, BSed or short term fixed should be ok.

SSShooter,

If you have a wad under your bullet to protect the base, the wad could stick to the base if it is not cleaned of all lube.

Keep on hav'n fun!

I use a cardboard wad over the powder then a newsprint wad.  After compression, I wipe the bullet base on newspaper and hand seat.  I can usually find the newsprint wad close to the firing line.  I have shot some very good 600 yard scores with this technique.

I'll second that, Jack.   Wink  I've watched you shoot some of those targets.

Am using a 0.030" wad, and will be experimenting with a 0.060" wad, as well. Will also try the newspaper layer. However, am using the bullet to do the compressing of the powder and can hear it 'crunch' at the end of the seating process. Is there anything to be gained by compressing the powder as a separate step?

Pretty easy to deform the bullet if you try to compress gunpowder with it.  Harry Pope made a big deal about how any defacement of the base affected accuracy.  I tap the side of the rim to settle the powder, and it seems to work ok. Wink
