32/40 load info sought

Print Post
I purchased a CPA 32/40 several months ago with the intention of starting to shoot some ASSRA events.  In the months since I have been swamped with litigation and tax work so I haven't been shooting at all.  I will probably be cursed for saying this but I am finally starting to get my head above water in regards to my work load and thus it is time to get to the range.

Here is what I have:

Primer - deprimer

Harrell Supreme powder measure (just ordered today)

Houch 205 gr mould

Breach seater

RCBS scales (balance and digital)

All the normal casting and reloading gear.

What I need now is advice on loads for a novice breach seater like me.

Thanks in advance.

Dave

Thanks Joe.  Believe it or not I read that before the post and then again after your post.  Maybe I am being too careful but I don't recall seeing anything specifically for the 205gr Houch bullet.  Maybe I missed it.

I use a 200 grain tapered Hoch bullet in some of my 32/40s.  IMR 4227 12.5 to 14grains works good.  Pressures are low.  Also have used IMR 4759. 13 gr?  Have had excellent accuracy with Hodgdon Lilgun powder. Start at 10 grains.

The pressures are low in all the posted loads, I think.   Huh

I doubt you'll find anything specific on your bullet. After all, the weight can vary by five grains depending on the alloy.

Pick a safe load and go start shooting.    Wink

You're gonna like the CPA Dave. I had the opportunity to shoot an OH target with Mike Otterbergs CPA in .32 Ideal.   Excellent OH rifle. Perfect DS tigger. Fast lock time and fit like a glove.  I didnt want to give it back to Mike.  Sad

I shoot my CPA 32/40 breech seated about like Joe does. around 14 grs of 4227

One thing you ought to do at home is run a series of test on the Harrell's measure with 4227.  Rather than take the scale to the range have a notebook with weight of charge for readings on the Harrell's.  Scales don't do well outdoors, shaky mounting wind blows the balance around etc.

I use 4759 but don't throw it from my Harrells measure. 4759 is hard to throw from any measure, all of it I load fixed at home check weighing every round

For example in my  data book used for both the 32/40 and 38/55 CPA Barrels.

Harrell's Hodgdon 4227
26 = 14   gr
27.5=14.7gr  Standard 32/40 load
29 = 15   gr
30 = 16.5 gr
33 = 17.5 gr Standard 38/55 load
35 = 18.5 gr
37 = 19.7 gr
38 = 20.3 gr

Don't use these readings one Harrells may not read like another find your own from test.

You will note the measurements are not linear, That's because they are from single throws not a 10 throw test. Only one I test extensively for weight are the ones I use the most 27.5 clicks & 33 clicks  They are pasted on the outside of the Harrell's powder bottle that's also pasted with a sticker "4227 only"

Dave do a search on my testing with Alliant 300MP in the 32-40, I have some on hand if you would like to give it a run for the money and if so let me know when you can set aside some time to come down this way and we can spend some time at the range together.

Have you been receiving the match invitations from the Modesto Rifle Club and if not let me know and I will insure that you are included in the e-mailing list.

We have a match scheduled for the Saturday!

John, That sounds great.  I have been getting the notices but I haven't had the free time.  Things are lightening up a bit now.  This week end I have out of town guests so I can't make it.

Getting together at the range sounds great.

Thanks to all for the responses.  I am making a list of the powder options and my choice for now will be dictated by what is available locally for now.
