Coors was both OH and Bench but, you could not win it if you were a great OH shot!!!

We have nothing to attract the really good OH shooter any more. That's one of the things I miss about ASSRA. I've made the statement before that ASSRA should hold one big truly National match for the 100 shot, include BR at say 50 shots or make it a 100/100 OH BR match but, advertise it and pay off with money or prizes worth something substantial.

Frank

The ISSA matches at Raton are the outgrowth/continuation of the Coors matches.  50 shots each OH & bench, irons and scopes, shoulder to shoulder for four days.  The problem with attendance being from the location and current lack of corporate sponsorship that we had in the past...

Frank one approach might be along the lines of the ASSRA Ballard All American Match where one could shoot your proposed match at their home range due to the current economic situation and have the scores submitted to the ASSRA for the awards presentation. I am not sure if ASSRA has the funding to make the prizes worth while but contributions from the vendors who support this sport might be able to make it worthwhile? It would require the clubs that would be willing to provide this event to be registered with ASSRA in order to have it qualify as a registered match. I believe our club might be interested to provide such an event?

KAF,
With out the boards support and leader ship, nothing can happen.

The BoD are the ones that propossed the 100 shot off hand match in 1986 as a way to keeping the sport of OH shooting alive. The leader ship has to be the one that starts the organization of anything with the ASSRA's name on it. They are the one's that will make the ASSRA profit from it. If the board would make a up a event. Then It could be started. It would need a BR part to induce many shooters to attend, it would need promotion, and it would need a substantial OA winner prize and a good size BR prize. The prizes could be 50/50 donation and ASSRA. Until that time it's only a pipe dream.

I'll even suggest a name for it, that would attract people to it.

The Jim Feren World Offhand and Benchrest Championship Match
Presented by the American Single Shot Rifle Association

His remarkable, never equaled record could be a draw for the offhanders to try to beat. With a large prize to go with it (say $1000 or more). That would be a pretty safe bet for ASSRA because, I don't think it can be beat. Only Luke came close and he was about 40 pionts out.

Frank

PS
If it could increase the membership eight fold as Coors did, think of the benefits.

John,
That's not a bad idea. It could develop into the qualifying matches like your Modesto group used to do for the Coors matches.

It has to start somewhere and have a commitment to develop it into one large match held at different locations through out the US.

Even send invitations to Europe like they did at the turn of the century.

Rather than World (a little over the top, I agree but a attention getter) it could be called International with a commitment to hold matches in Canada.

Frank

You can say many things about me but, you can never say that I haven't promoted the ASSRA since 1985, to all that will lesson.

Frank I admire your dedication.

To take it one step further it would be my thoughts to also have a separate class for the newer shooters who cannot afford the equipment we have grown to taken advantage of. Not sure how that could be accomplished but an off the shelf TC Encore maybe using fixed ammunition in a traditional caliber might be something to look at? I think if one were to pursue it TA might make a run of rifles to accommodate it? I have often wondered how I could get one to shoot off the bench breach seated but I never had the funds to pursue it.

I beat the T/C drum long time ago but was frustrated by the short barrel rule. It was rimfire 18 1/2 inches with a 6.5x20 Leupold, wonderful trigger too.  Not that I needed one had two Schuetzens but was shooting the Contender carbine in Smallbore Silhouette with good results. Idea was to use it as a loner rifle at local matches. Since sold it off and right after understand the short barrel rule was removed

Fellow at Columbia Schuetzen shot one in 32 Miller bench & offhand breech seated and did very well. You don't need a expensive rifle if it's set up and handled properly. Contender/Encores have a very good record in Silhouette. Mostly with aftermarket barrels. Switch barrel rim and center fire scope and set of Iron sights under 1000 dollars ready to go.  CPA set up the same way 5000 dollars. there is a barrier to entry for you.

A shooter used a long barreled contender something er other in 38/55 at the Glasgow MT match a couple weekends ago.  His first match I think. He had fun with it and also won the percussion schuetzen match with a  borrowed rifle.

I have nothing against TC's, NEF or any of the break open guns. I have two Savage 219's in 22/3000 2R and 30/30. The only issue with them is breech seating, not easy! And if they have a ejector (mine does) trying to catch the brass. They are a good traditional design. And could get someone started, especially CBA fixed shooters. I believe they could be competive if throated for fixed.
