This is my Jamison case after more than 200 shots BSed in a original Stevens 44 chamber. Two shots at 90 deg to each other.

I dont use pistol primers in my rifle. It has the large square reversible firing pin nose.  Pistol primers are a bit too delicate.

I was hoping more of the forum experts would wade in on this.  Maybe I'm still not using the forum correctly.   Huh Grin

In either case I'm trying as hard as I can.

In my case, Frank, I have been assuming that the H108 powder is being blown up to the base of the bullet then on ignition, wedging between the end of the case mouth and bullet base which pounds the neck down.  One case is good for about ten shots. Maybe I should rotate the case and keep shooting?  Seat the bullet deeper? Seat the bullet closer to the case mouth?  A lighter charge with pistol primers?

The best target I've shot from the bench in competition using IMR 4227 was a 246.  Certainly good enough for me.  I posted the pictures for those that may find them some help or just interesting. Wouldnt mind hearing some good suggestions from the experts on this forum.  Wink

Joe,
Maybe the heavier blast of the rifle primers could be doing that. The primer that I've been using with that case is the Wolf SP. I had the same trouble on my Ballard with the original firing pin. What I did was file the square tip to a V and pistol primers now work fine. If that didn't work, I was going to put it in the mill and turn the tip round with a boring head setup to do it that way.

I really don't think that the priming charge is what is lighter in pistol powers. The material is softer letting the rifle go off with a lighter hammer fall. In many cases this will get rid of stringing caused bu indifferent ignition. if I remember correctly the small primer that goes off with the least pressure is the Federal 205 M. At least that is the way I learned it. If I am wrong I'm happy to be schooled.

Thanks 40_Rod. I didnt know that, about pistol and rifle primers.

I'm leaving the firing pin the way it is. Works good with rifle primers and 4227. I'm sure it shoots better than I can hold.  Wink

Wow John,
There is a huge amount of difference between the primers that they tested.
