Just bought this Win 1885 High Wall Musket in .22LR for my brother. Anyone seen one before? British proof marks, so we know where its been. Have not seen a .22LR High Wall before.

Hello SSShooter,

I've seen very few of these .22" High Wall Muskets here in England and those that I have seen were chambered for the .22" Short cartridge. It may be yours has been rechambered at a later date. This was not too successful as the different weight of the bullets required different rifling twists to make them shoot accurately.

What condition was the bore in or stated to be in? Most of these rifles were used with Black Powder charged cases and thus the bores are seldom found in good condition. If you can see the rifling you'll be lucky. There are a number of Gunsmiths that will fit a barrel liner in whatever .22RF round you wish with a twist to suit the bullet.

I hope the rifle is as good as it looks in the picture.

Harry

The bore is listed as 'mint' and a phone discussion with the seller backs that up. The muzzle is stamped "Rifled by Alf J. Parker", who became half of the Parker-Hale duo. My brother wanted as a good match for his Bonehill-Martini, which also has a mint bore and shoots about as well as any .22 rimfire single shot we've owned, Also, a good match for his Stevens 414.

Very nice indeed SSShooter, there cannot be many Alf Parker marked barrels left these days and those that are, cannot be in better condition. A very nice collectors and shooters rifle. Congratulations.

Questions, questions:

What sort of sights, front & rear?  The rear sight looks something like an old Winchester-Hotchkiss, a manufacturing over-run from the days when Winchester tried to make & sell the Hotchkiss bolt action 45-70s.  Winchester used those sights on early (pre-Winder) muskets.

The long perch belly fore-end looks to me like the sort found on 3rd Model Winder Muskets.  Were those put on earlier muskets?

And does it have an automatic ejector?

Has it been relined? The end of the barrel looks like it to me. My Stevens Bisley has been relined with a Parker Hale liner and is marked similarly on the end of the barrel. The British seem to have liked to reline our .22's to suit themselves.

Possible that it has been lined, but won't be able to determine that until it arrives. If so, I'll likely just make a fire-poker out of the old barrel and put a new one on it.

Here is a picture of the rear sight.

If has been relined by Parker I would strongly suggest that you try different types of 22rf ammo in it. The Parker rifled bbls in 22rf have a good reputation for being of excellent quality and you may be quite suprised by the accuracy. Many of the 22rf martinis like the model 12 and 12/15 were relined and shoot with outstanding accuracy. Frank

Am only kidding with 'fire poker' comment. My brother nor I care that it is or isn't a lined barrel. It is quite a unique rifle and it will be our priviledge to have in our collection until such time as death do us part, when it will, hopefully, go to another owner who will also have the appropriate appreciation of what it is.
