Reduced brass question

I came across a box of reduced  38-55  and 32-40  brass.  It is a lot heavier than regular brass.  What does one do with it?  (Does it have any advantage over regular brass?)

I played with reduced capacity brass back in the mid 80's and 90's. I made cases in 30/40 krag, 45/70, 308 and 32/40 with both large and small primer pockets.

I had some success with but, nothing a good day would not have equaled with a full size case. The small primer pocket only succeed in reducing velocity by 20 to 50 fps with no real advantage in accuracy that I could tell.

One of my 30/40 cases, I made with a 1.9 cc capacity. It worked pretty good and I could get 1350 fps with only 10.5 gr of 296 and a 187 gr bullet, BSed. The one thing I can say for sure is, they can save you powder.

It was in some stuff my late father in law had.   If it is reduces power, I can't really see the purpose for 200yd  targets.   I want my boolits going faster  for less exposure to the elements

I tried them too but found no advantage. Idea is good and it would stand to reason smaller interior capacity would be more consistent. I suspect any gain was so small it got lost in my offhand wobble area.

Lately I am on the fixed path not even breech seating. Most of my matches have best results when not making stupid errors, simple suits that better than anything else.

On the power, no difference, I just used faster powder and less of it for the same velocity.  My 200 yard 32 cal 200 grain opinion is launch fast enough to arrive on target just super sonic. About 1450 fps muzzle.  That's pretty much consensus most Schuetzen shooters.

You guys jump in if seeing it another way

The bench rest boys got on a serious kick of looking for optimal load density... trying to fill up the case volume to some perfect ratio with just enough air left.  The schuetzen crowd responded with the various iterations of .32/XXX such as Charlie Dell's .32/.357 and the Western variety, the .32 Miller Short.  The reduced capacity .32-40 was an attempt to do the same thing in a standard sized case profile.  That's my story and I'm sticking to it!  Cool

I have some and use them in my 32-40 as a safety measure. It is my practise to use a wad that is pushed down to about .200" off the powder. This is hard with the 32-40 an the inside is tapered and the wad quickly will lose tension and just fall into the case. I used to use a .33 cal wad and that would just have enough tension to hold. With the reduced capacity case the chamber is a straight shot so I can use a .32 cal wad. Once the wad is in place I know that I have not double charged my case. If I have either the wad won't seat to the stop or the powder will come up so close to the mouth that you can see it.
