Buffington sight on a Trapdoor

I have a trapdoor rifle with a 17A front sight and a Buffington rear and it seems like if I opened up the aperture a little I could see better.
Anybody have any experience and/or advice? I'm pushing 60 and the sights don't seem so clear as they did when I was 30.

Jeff,

Before you drill the sight, get a piece of paper or sheet metal and drill that with gradually larger holes.  Tape the piece with the holes to the Buffington sight staff with the hole over the Christmas tree opening.  If after you've tried a few different size holes it will become apparent weather or not drilling out the sight will work.  I can no longer see the staff at the distance it is from my eye on the rifle no matter what size hole.  On a good day, I can make out the notch but not always.  I miss shooting my trapdoors.  FM

Thanks all for the advice. Yes, I know about the Merit device, but, there must be a way to do it cheaper.

Cheapest way is to put holes in a 3/4 inch stick on dot.

Consider the right size hole is going to be different on different days too.  I open and close my disk during a match if the light is on and off. Nice sharp front sight when it's bright and disk is stopped down goes completely out when a cloud passes over.

Trapdoor I do two things. Replace the front blade with one wider & taller & use the Merritt shooting glass disk. Don't ruin the Trapdoors value and get the best sight picture.
