In geology, sand is detrital material between 2mm diameter on the coarse end to 1/16mm diameter on the fine end, so sand basically refers to a particulate size range.
A sand can be pretty much any material so long as it is
detrital material, which is composed of minerals occurring in sedimentary rocks, which were derived from preexisting igneous, sedimentary, or metamorphic rocks, as produced by the disintegration and weathering of rocks that has been moved from its site of origin.
And of course, the disintegration, weathering and movement occurs by natural earth processes. So says the American Geological Institute's Dictionary of Geological Terms.
PS: Sorry Jeff, but every University level Geology Professor I've encountered would give you a failing grade if you listed Wikipedia as a referenced source in your research, and you were warned the very first day of lecture. As they say, science is science.
