Go to Tractor Supply and get a bag of "Black Diamond" blasting sand.
About 1/3 heavier than sily sand.

Is there not something in THE RULES about there having to be SAND in the sand bags?

it specifies "sand"  in principle as opposed to filling it with lead shot as some did in the past.  I do not have access to my copy of the rule book right now.  I'm not sure whether it gives chemical composition or grit size specification.

So if my silica sand just happens to have a high Pb-Sn content, I should still be in compliance....right?     Grin

Jeff,
What makes "black Diamond" so heavy? Do you know?

This might explain it:

Thanks Brian,
It looks like it's about 80% or more metal, mostly iron.

From the book:
(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

Section 2.91: Sandbags and Rests
A sandbag or shaped rear rest sand filled bag made of leather or canvas may be used under the toe of the butt stock. An anti-cant device (bob-sled) similar to the Pope style muzzle rest or the one described in Mann’s book is permitted. Also a spirit level or sight attached to the barrel is permitted. A simple stop may be attached to the front rest as an aid in realigning the rifle for the next shot. This may be contacted by the muzzle rest or the forearm at the discretion of the shooter if used at all. The front rest assembly and rear bag may not be connected mechanically or tied together. The shooting bench top surface is the only common connection between the two that will be allowed.

Frank,

I'm thinking my bags filled with backstop sand and a few bullet tailings probably weighs less than Jeff's boiler plate slag.     Wink

I am suspecting that this is ne of those grey areas that has been subject to SM-interpretation in the past.

I KNOW I was told when I first got started that sand-only, no lead shot was allowed.  However I did not dare to ask to see the chapter and verse at the time.  I did not have a front rest and was suing a couple of stacked bags of bird shot as a front rest.  It was permitted as a "guest/visitor" but I got a cheap orange Outers rest before the next match

The rule says SAND with no exceptions so, it should be decided by the definition of what sand is. Other wise it is breaking the rule.

How else will a match director be able to make a decision if there were a protest.

Sand, a loose granular material that results from the disintegration of rocks, consists of particles smaller than gravel but coarser than silt.
Ok for sake of discussion.

"disintegration of rocks"   Is Iron ore a rock?  Does it have to be disintegrated by nature or man made machines?
Lake sand or Bank sand?
Slag sand?
Silica sand?
Depleted uranium sand?
Galena  sand?

There are Many different sands.
One definition will not work, will it?

Well KAF,

For the sake of discussion:
If I'm following your line of reasoning properly, then you could probably call the bullet particles obtained from steel bullet traps "sand" as well. Wouldn't be much different than lead shot, would it?

You could call lead shot the equivalent of galena sand, I suppose. After all, natural hydraulic transport of eroded materials from the parent source to a distal area provides rounding of the transported materials due to impact and abrasion along the way.

I'm left wondering what your definition of "IS" is?      Wink
