.22 L.R. lube?

Hello, I came across this on (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links); It seems some of the rimfire match shooters are continuing the old tradition of "working over" their ammunition..just as Pope said he had to.  One fellow got Eley's bullet lube..tallow & beeswax.  I wonder what Lapua uses..their match grade is extreemly accurate in the Pope-BSA, and it's slippery!  on a hot day, I can hardly hold on to the stuff..very thin colorless, kind of puts me in mind of a silicon type lube?

The late Jesse Smiley (Javalina Lube) used to dip his .22s in straight Alox, said they shot much better.      ...MIKE...

I knew of one shooter that would dip his bullets in "molly" swore that it made his rifle shoot much better. Still wasn't good enough to win though.

I've been shooting old-lot Wolf ME,  some discontinued Lapua, and now trying Fiocchi SM with no lube complaints from any of them.  ONce the wold and lapua are gone I'm thinking the Fiocchi will be my ammo of choice. The Fiocchi occasionally leaves some granuals of blond-ish stuff, maybe unburned powder.   But based on the patterns on the 200 yd target velocity is very uniform---no vertical shot stringing like I get with all of the Wolf's.

I'm not convinced that tweaking 22 rf lube has any real merit.  I shoot the Fiocchi at 200 yd bench, Lapua at 100 OH and Wolf at 50 yd OH.  range conditions and shooter induced variables are far bigger factors once decent factory ammo has been determined and acquired.   Maybe at 100 or 200 with a shooting machine on a wind free range it might make a difference.  maybe a heavy bench BR-50-type match rifle might show it too.

I might have improved a bit  the Wolf by weight sorting or rim gauging.

I'm using a Steve Durren reworked heavy barrel Ruger #1 for the 200 yard bench and a nice vintage German Martini schuetzen for most of my offhand

Posted some time ago about buying 6 bricks of old RWS R 50 from a pawn shop.  It shoots great in my 2 Rimfire CPA Barrels and a few others that I have given sample boxes too.

Shop also had 6 bricks of RWS Pistol Match and 6 bricks of Eley Silhouex, all this from an estate sale. I bought everything, 18 bricks total.  The Pistol Match is working well in my Marlin 39A's and Low Wall with a Green Mt barrel. Won a few offhand matches with it.  Tight Fit in the match chambered guns though. CPA real tight. Anyway it has a home in the Lever actions. No lube issues with it even though real old.

Silhouex is another story. Lube was dry and caked real hard to chamber in any rifle. I hand wiped several boxes and re-lubed with SPG. Shot tight groups out of the Green Mt Barreled Low Wall. However that hand work was a lot of trouble.  Put 200 rounds in the vibrator and cleaned all the lube off in about 15 minutes, Then into a plastic jar with a good squirt of Ballistol. Again shot great out of the Low Wall. No leading no cleaning problems. Silhouex most people say was just re-badged Eley Black box intended to sell to the Silhouette shooter.

Afraid it was just going to get worse as time passed and it's going to take me a long time to use up the R50 and Pistol Match look all the Silhouex to one of my monthly modern rifle Silhouette matches. Couple of hundred rounds in a jar Balistol lubed for guys to try. Would not sell any until they had tried it in there rifles. Sold every box for 2 bucks each, what I paid for it, and have good reports from everybody that bought it. They are asking for more. Most of these guys shop for ammo at Wal Mart.

Speculating only and based on offhand matches,  Lube is important but in a good barrel which lube is not all that important. Who would have figured tumbled and Balistol lubed ammo would shoot. Comparing the Eley cleaned and re-lubed to the cheap copper coated stuff so many guys used, it's a whole lot better.
