Take a look at my perchbelly RB 22

I thought you fellow might like to take a look at this little rolling block 22. I have had it a long time and it's a fun little rifle to shoot. I know when this rifle was built that you could order them with special features. This one has a Swiss butt plate, checkered wood, ebony tipped forearm, 28 inch tapered barrel and a Marble Arms tang site.

The bore is a little rough but it is shootable. I often thought of having it religned, but then it would not be original and might take away some of it's collectors value.

Several years ago I contacted Remington to see what information and records they may have. They did not keep records and were of no help to me.

I have been to alot of gun shows over the years in the Midwest and have never seen one set up like this before. I was wondering how much of these features were factory ordered or were put on later.

Any additional information on these little rifles would be appreciated.

Hard to tell from just a couple of pictures, but I would guess that the action has been refinished (originals were color cased or nickel) and that the buttstock is non-factory.  The swiss butt is definitely not factory installed, and the checkering and tang inletting look wrong too.  The dark streaks in the wood finish are a good indication that it was sanded and refinished.  It could just be a refinish and checkering on an original stock and the swiss butt added and the inletting fit to the receiver is from the sanding process.  The tang sight was added, and the front globe.  The rear sight looks like a replacement also.

Neat #2 rifle either way.  I'd reinlet the buttplate and set it back about 1/8 inch to get a seamless inlet.  That would make it look a lot less obvious.

I have a #2 that has no bore that I'm thinking about redoing.  Buttstock has been patched, nickel is about 80% gone from receiver, it has been rebored to .25 rimfire and then the bore shot out again.  It'll be a good candidate for a custom.

Bigjim,

The Remington company has a policy of not releasing information to the general public.  However, it does sometimes allow scholarly members of the Remington Society of America to get data for books or articles.  You might contact the RSA, or member Roy Marcot, who probably knows more about past and present Remington products than anybody at Remington does.

bigjim,

Early production #2's had a metal forearm tip, and the schnabel forearm with ebony inset showed up later on.

The tang sight is a Marbles Simplex sight.

You've got yourself a pretty nice #2 rolling block thats worth shooting and enjoying.

Considering how many things have been changed on this #2, I wouldn't hesitate to get it shooting well with a new liner. I agree with SSDave, it's been reblued, checkered after it left Rem., and the small swiss buttplate added.
It's a neat little piece, but you wont hurt it relining the barrel if it's done properly.
