Bullet choices for .32-40

Right now I'm shooting the Lyman 319247, but would like to try a heavier bullet.

I'm shooting fixed--what can those of you with experience suggest?

Also, I'm relatively new to this, so I'm wondering, if somebody says such and such bullet is good for Schuetzen, can I still shoot it fixed, or is there something about the shape that makes it less desirable?

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Most Schuetzen bullets are tappered. You can still shoot them fixed if, you can size the case to still hold the base band and jam the tapper into the throat. Powder charge will have to come down about 1 gr for the same velocity when shooting fixed or increase it that much going from fixed to BS. Accuracy won't be as good fixed in any case with std throats.

Hi,
Take a look at
Eagle-BR.com
The bullets there are only tapered near the front.
The heavier they are, the longer the straight section is.

Also need to keep in mind that the twist rate of your barrel will dictate what weight (length) bullet you can stabilize.  I can stabilize (just barely) a 208 gr spitzer in my 1 in 16 inch twist barrel.

what Joe said is right on the $$$. my 1-16 right hand twist barrel will just barely shoot a 1.16" spitzer bullet but my left hand twist 1-15 shoots it great. drop down to a .95" spitzer and the 1-16 shoots ok. the weight difference between the 2 bullets is 8 grains.
there are just to many variables involved to state categorically what the rules are. like John Louis says there is no magic bullet, just trial and error and lots of trigger time! Smiley Smiley

The 165 grain Lyman bullet you are shooting is probably your best coice for fixed ammo.  But if you want to get a little more serious and be competitive in the Schuetzen game you want to consider breech seating the bullet separately.  The 165 grain Lyman is a flat nosed bullet that won't handle the wind quite as well as a spitzer pointed bullet.  But now you are getting in to having a custom bullet mould made for the rifle.  You will also need a breech seating tool to seat the bullet in your rifle.  To insure the proper sizing of the bullet you will need a chamber cast of your rifle.

You could try the Saeco .323" 200 Grn. RNFP Saeco 1-Cav. Mould, Tapered.  That bullet is .002 larger than the 165 grain bullet and will probably need you to breech seat the bullet.  That depends on the bore diameter of your rifle and if a leade was cut in the front of the chamber to permit breech seating.  You would still need someway to seat the bullet.  With the CPA Stevens you can seat bullets with a case that is plugged with a brass rod.  Gail at CPA sells those for $6 plus shipping.  The action is strong enough that closing the lever will seat the bullet on those rifles.

First of all what kind of .32 40 rifle are we talking about?  Is this a new rifle or an older rifle that had already been used for Schuetzen?
