Howdy all,

I drew an Elk tag for this winter and plan on using my Pedersoli rolling block.  It's a 26" barrel with I BELIEVE a 1:20 or 1:22 twist.   I load with 5744.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I don't know anything about Elk. Deer are probably easier to kill than Elk is my guess. For Deer lighter bullets going faster are good solutions, don't kick as much and shoot flatter. Flatter shooting you are more sure of a vital hit. Might be you need heavy 45 bullets though.

Before high velocity small bore's like the .30 US there was a strong trend toward "express loadings" lighter bullets in the 40's and 45's.   My Marlin 1895 45/70 is a good performer with a 360 gr copy of the Gould Hollow point bullet, without the hollow point.

Boats,

That's an excellent guess. Elk are large animals and can absorb a lot of punishment. When hunting in the thick stuff, my go-to is the 45-90 WCF with a heavy bullet moving at a good clip.

There are three kinds of men: The ones that learn by reading, the few who learn by observation, and the rest who have to pee on the electric fence and find out for themselves.

Only thing I know about elk is spotting at Raton. Seems they are in open country were you have some time to adjust sights too. Eastern Whitetails it's often a snap shot  in thick cover, flat shooting makes a difference.  360 gr 45 at about 1500 feet is plenty powerfull for Whitetail Deer
