I have an early [circa 1910] 49 HB gallery gun in 22 short. Are all of these guns extractor guns or did they evolve to sprung extractor/ejector guns over time? Just curious.

I bought a 44 1/2, 49 from Ron Peterson about 35 years ago, it's a 3 digit serial number, (7XX), 22 short, wood was destroyed, barrel was junk, in & out, prongs were cut off the buttplate, etc. Restocked it, Paul Shuttleworth put a Darr barrel on it in 32-40 & traded me a center fire block for my rimfire, has doublesets, beauiful action,,,,,but was before ejector change (no hole in receiver walls, in front of breech block).     I've also heard of 44-49s with ejectors, so you figure it out.  ...MIKE...

My Stevens 49 is built on the 44 action in .22 RF and has no automatic ejector. I'd have to go look to see which serial number range it has.

Vail,
That's as good as it gets for a 22 RF. Have you shot it much? If so, what ammo does it like?

Thanks Frank! Yes, I've shot it a lot, and so far it likes ammo that's a bit hotter than target velocity. The 28" barrel is long enough that I think it actually drops velocity before it reaches the muzzle.
CCI std. velocity groups best, but even some of the higher velocity stuff works very nicely if I take the time to weigh and sort it to get all of it within a grain or so in weight variance.
I tried some of the exotic match ammo, but I think I'm not a good enough shooter to realise any significant difference.

Great rifle, Val.  I'm not a great fan of all the engraving.  If you had the identical rifle with the fancy stock, etc., but minus the engraving, what Model would it be?

Some questions:

1.  Is it chambered & rifled for Shorts or is it set up for Long Rifles?

2.  What is the twist?

3.  What is the groove diameter?  There is a great difference in bullet diameters by manufacturer, wear on machinery, & specifics of any particular load.

4.  What sort of front sight?

5.  Have you shot it from the bench at 50 or 100 yards?

6.  Have you tried it with a bobsled?

Again, a neat rifle.

Stevens would build anything the buyer wanted, but I'm not sure they had a model designation for a non engraved 49. I think you just special ordered a 49 minus engraving and they deducted the cost of the engraving.
It's actually chambered for .22 Long, but .22LR chamber in it too, and shoot great.
Don' t know the answers to #2&#3.
The rear is a Lyman 103 and the front is a Lyman #7 globe.
Haven't shot it from the bench at 50 yds, but have at 100 yds, and the indoor 50 ft. I've shot both offhand and bench. Since it's a .22RF it's a bit easier to shoot bench with the small swiss buttplate, whereas my centefire Stevens Schuetzen isn't quite as easy with it's large swiss and a tiny bit more recoil.
I've never used a bobsled on any of my guns.

Val and/or others, I know mine is unusual but anybody else ever see/own a 49 that never had sights mounted, only scope? I'll try and get a couple photos posted up here.

Here is a photo of my Stevens Model 45 in .22lr that left the factory with a Stevens #475 scope, 30" full octagon barrel with no front sight dovetail;

I may be wrong but I believe that the designation model 48 was the non engraved frame with plain stock and cheek piece.

Yes Tim I've seen several Stevens singleshot rifles with scopes on them, and no dovetails for sights. The markings are also usually moved to make sure the bases aren't through the rollstamp. All of them that I've seen also sported Stevens scopes too.
That 45 is very neat Sureshot! Looks in excellent condition! Full octagon barrels on any Stevens are very rare! Vast majority were half octagon!
