Cut a Lyman .40 Snover mold down to where it casts a 350 grain bullet. Shot a group half the size of the last one.  No wad.  What good are wads anyway?   I'm throwing all my wads in the garbage.   And the wad punches, and the hammer.

Jose...?  Who is Jose?  What happened to Joe?

Uh-oh, has there been another web-site hacking? We don't have another Anthony Weener scandal starting up, do we? Are we going to have more pictures popping up all over the web?
Don't do the therapy thing, Joe! Just don't do it!!

I had been looking for years for sutibly felt for wads.

Rod, Duro-Felt is your source ... (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links); Look around on the site for other thicknesses and densities

Asa, the owner, is a sweetheart.  About 10 years ago, us CAS shooters asked her if she could sell smaller quantities instead of the big rolls.  Bingo, done

I second what John Boy says---Asha at Durofelt is a sweetheart to deal with. I use a variety of wool felt thickness and density for different applications. Cleaner bore, better accuracy, with dry wool felt wads in both muzzleloader and BPCR. Jose what do you mean, "you don't need no stinking wads"? Looks like you could cut that group in half with the help of wads.

I thought that target was perty good for shooting off cross stix and no wind flags.   I went back to the Ron Long spitzer and shot this six shot group. No wind flags again.  It's a bear to set flags where I shoot.  In this rifle, wads of any kind open the groups.  It's shooting plenty good enough for this ole man.   Wink

A note -- Twist in this .40 is 22. I'm shooting a 1.300 length bullet.  Shoots good out to 600. GH formula says I need a 16 twist.

We dont need no stinkeeen wads for this gun!

Just a thought---I found that as little as .010 push on the wad when seating the bullet will obturate the bullet nose. Try seating the wads a little deeper than bullet seating depth.

Not sizing the cases. The bullet just sits on the powder.  Bullet would sit on the wad.  Using 50 grains Swiss 1.5.   Now I'm wondering how the ammo will perform after the long trip to Butte. The loose bullets sitting on the powder column. Would have to compress the powder. Thinking maybe I should assemble the ammo after I get there.  The same ammo didnt perform well at Cody a couple weeks ago.  Also need all the space I can get for powder in the little case.  I think the rifle will hold the 23 ring or very close if I had wind flags and I do my part.  By golly that arta be good enough.  Good enough for those steel critters anyway.

Joe not just the bullets sitting on top but the jiggling of the ride settles the powder also, or that is my belief. I formed the opinion when I was using my chronograph habitually. I was loading cases at home so I could shoot faster at the line. When I got to matches I noticed that my spreads were longer than at home. The longer the trip the more erratic the spread. I stopped loading at home and started loading at the range again. The spreads came back to normal.

Yep, gonna take all the stuff I need and assemble it at the range just like I've been doing here at home.    Wink

Last year I hauled a bunch of 660 and 750 gr composite bullets with soft bases to Cody. When I got there all the bullet bases were mushroomed. Luckily I had a little bullet base trimming tool in the shooting box.  I never considered the hammering things take on a long trip.

Helo, I made up wad cutters out of air-hardening tool steel..in shape they are tapered, with shank..look alot like ones used with hammer..only these are ground with a razor-knife edge..wouldn,t want to bang on these..or even drop e'm!  There HARD.  Knock-out hole thru shank.  I use in drill press with nylon backer.
One thing about wads..I use them in my .40's, with black & smokeless.  However in doing extensive testing in a Win. High-Wall in .38-55, either with black, or smokeless, no matter what thickness, or material, groups always opened.

Correction, the bullets are 1.5 inches long.  Knocked down six rams in a stiff wind last weekend.  22 inch twist, huh?

Joe,

Your results with a 1.5" long bullet in the 22" twist 40 cal reminds me of the scientist who came out saying there was no way that Billy Dixon could ever have made his famous shot. At least, that is until they set up a test and proved the scientist wrong.      Grin

I always suspected that Greenhill guy.  Undecided

When I use this GH calculator it says I need a 14. something twist.

Maybe I'm not doing it right?   Bullet diameter is .410, lead 11.3, length 1.5, velocity 1300.  ??

I ran two known stable bullets and twists in that calulator. Both were with RL spitzers.

30 cal 1.165 long 187 gr, 14 twist. It says I need 10.9

32 cal 1.165 long 208 gr, 15 twist. It says I need 11.8 for that one.

I like the Don Miller calulator better.

And it agrees with my barrels and bullets.
