Quote:Is anyone still offering castings? I'd like a complete set of Ballard reciever parts, i had a nice #4, but had to sell it.Nowthat i'm retired on SSI, i cannot afford an original, but my father was a machinest.I have a milling machine, a lathe, and drill press. So, i'm well equiped to make a new one. Also i don't like wood work, and with no tangs, they say a Ballard is easy to stock.I'm moving soon, so i don't know if i'd make a .22rf or a centerfire. My last Ballard was a 38-55, and i had a lot of fun with it.I'm sure Frontier armory is out of business, but did anyone ever replace them?
Hello JP,
Yes, Frontier Armoury is out of business, the moulds and presumably plans and other items were bought up by a gunmaking company in the USA but I cannot recollect whom, but someone on this Forum will know. I understand they are making complete rifles of one design from one of the castings sets. Whether they are going to supply kits is another matter and only time will tell.
You can get a set of Machinists Drawings from The Archivist of the ASSRA Library for US$ 10.00. These are A4 size and will need enlarging to full size at your local photocopy shop for a few more dollars. I have a set of these and they are all you will need to make a copy of the Ballard Action.
Alternatively, you could advertise for one of the old Frontier castings sets, but if any part is missing, broken or damaged you are unlikely to get a replacement part. It's likely that there are a few kits about under peoples workbenches. Be advised the kits do need a lot of machining to get them built into a working rifle action, but it can be done.
Good luck in your search.
