Old badge: "Nationaler Schuetzenbund of America"

Hello schuetzen-historians!

I've found that old American shooter's badge but couldn't figure out yet what's the history behind the "National Schuetzenbund of America". Was this a club or a association? Does it still exist?

There is written the year "1898" but I don't know, if that's the founding year or the year of issue.

Its made of sterling-silver (marked) and made in N.Y.

Can anybody help me with that item?  Roll Eyes

Greetings from Bavaria

Biggi,
That is a great medal that many of us would like to have for our collections.
To answer your question about the National Schuetzenbund I have a few facts following a quick look through my library. The National Schuetzenbund was formed in 1895. Local schuetzen clubs from around the country were encouraged to join. After much planning and preparation the first "National Bundfest" was held at Glendale park in Glendale, Long Island beginning on June 30 and lasting for 9 days.To give you an idea of the participation there were 268 shooters who scored 50 or better in the Honor Match. There were several matches exceeding 100 shooters.
Of special interest is the following note which appeared in Shooting and Fishing May 16, 1895 "The Shooting Association of Neustadt a. d. Haardt Germany we are informed will send a fine silver cup for the Honor target of the National Bund."
I would not be a bit surprised if someone from that club came over to try to win the cup back.
The Bundfest was held every 3 years, but they never surpassed the participation of the first year.
If I had some idea who your medal belonged to I could search the names of the winners in 1898.
I Hope this information was of interest.

Hi Ken!

Thanks for your real good and very interesting information about that old badge.  Smiley

So it was given to the winner of the honor match at the 1898's National Bundfest? Only one shooter had the possibility to win that silver-cross? Or several shooters with a defined score got that badge?

I think it was won by a German shooter from the region round Stuttgart in Württemberg. It is out of a estate where some other badges from that region were sold.

Does this "National Schuetzenbund of America" still exist nowadays?

Thanks!        Biggi.   Smiley

Ken, thanks to your information I found something about that 1898's match in the archive of the New York Times.

But it seems to be an intermediate result of the whole match and not the final result? Couldn't find more in the for-free NYT archive about that match...

Hhhhmmm, it's called "National Sharpshooters". Was it also possible for Germans to participate those matches?
Huh

This is actually more information then I have. One of those silver medal winners in the NY Times article could be the guy who won your medal. It would be possible for someone from Germany to win this target even if not a member of the club. All they would need to do is pay the usual Park entry fee. That would have been 2 or 3 dollars.

THX. Okay, now we know more than before.  Smiley

If an US-collector is interested in that medal, I would sell it.  Roll Eyes

My focus of collecting shooter's medals and badges is Munich and Bavaria, so I dont need it for my collection.

    Good Morning Biggi ;

Very interesting post on your part.  I certainly appreciated the historical aspect of your information.

Since you are not particularly interested in adding the medal into your collection,  I would be interested in acquiring it to add to my collection.

In order to maximize your income from the medal's sale, you may want to consider placing it with the web auction company, E-Bay.  For a small commission, you will receive world wide exposure with much interest from the U.S.

Thanks again and its been nice seeing your medal.

Regards,
Creedmoormatch

Yep, that would be the other possibility to place that nice and rare item on ebay.  Undecided And I love it to maximize my income...  Wink

...the flight tickets to US are expensive!  Shocked

But I thought maybe I can find a real collector friend among these forum guys. I dont want to sell it to an antique dealer, who would sell it also (increasing his income)!!!  Angry

   Biggi ;

Although I would dearly love to include your medal in my schuetzen collection and am prepared to pay a worthy sum of money in order to acquire it from you, I believe the medal deserves to be part of a public collection so as to place it in the forefront for the public to appreciate.

I would be interested in entering into discussions with you for the purpose of sharing information about the Museum I have in mind and the conditions under which the medal would come to the United States and how it would be displayed in a permanent exhibit dealing with the schuetzen sports in American and it's German roots in Europe during the latter part of the 19 th Century.

  Regards,

  Webb

Hi Frank!

Yep, seems to be a very rare schuetzen medal. As far as I figured out there were not be given a lot of those, maybe only 15 medals at the 1898 Schuetzenfest at Glendale Park.

Don't know the collector's value in US.  Undecided

For interesting offers, please use the PM function. I'll decide afterwards. I think some more of the forum members should see that gorgeous item.

   Best regards!            Biggi.   Smiley

Because of some inquiries: Okay, here an intermediate-result of the current bids!

$ 50 ? Was this serious?
$100 ? Oh no, that's too low.
$125 ? Oooops, out of race.
$150 ? Sorry my friend, other bids are higher...
$200 ? Sounds not bad, but there is already a higher bid!

Does anybody want to slaughter his piggy-bank?  Wink Smiley

Thanks for the bids, I'll decide end of the week.

Best regards from Bavaria.

I wouldn't say it the same way, kind of made me think of the proctologist but that is another story.  However it does seem like a cool thing for ASSRA to acquire and preserve.  The only problem I have is the proposal reeks of spending other people's money.  It is always easier to say "They should..." when your money is not in the plan.

Therefore I propose those who are interested in acquiring this for the ASSRA to preserve belly up to the bar and pledge some hard earned cash to make it happen.  I'll start by pledging $50.00.

Biggi can tell us if and when we have convinced her to part with the beautiful medal.

Anyone else game?
