For the record, I own no bolt guns and likely never will. Grin Now and then, I do enjoy rattling the cages at the funny farm.

We've got quite enough nihilism in the national political arena, especially with the present Administration, thank you very much.   Let us have some peace and quiet here.

KWK - very good!  Even if we are here at the funyfarm by choice.   Wink

Different strokes for different folks. I like most any style gun, and I am sure there is a competition somewhere for most any type. I also understand why different groups restrict their competitions to certain types of guns.
Life is good! At east in the USA we have the choice of what to shoot (in most cases).

I belive that the no bolt gun tradition goes back to when the Krag was adopted by the military. There was bad feelings from the schuetzen folks about military high power that was at that time emerging as a seperate disipline. I remember reading that many shooters never forgave Hudson when he took up the Krag. There was also Pope's Stand on your hind legs and shoot like a man.

Okay...  I've got an original Win Hiwall factory chambered in 30 ARMY (Krag). I suppose that means it's ostracized by both camps.     Wink

I assumed something like that was at the root. The plain base bullet rule should take the fire out of the military rounds and leave the old guns on equal footing. With that rule, there is no advantage to the bolt guns, and other than spite, there's really no reason to ban them. As I mentioned earlier, what was more or less the German equivalent of the Stevens 44 put the Mauser 71s out of the German Schuetzen business.

Which brings to mind another question. At the time the ASSRA formed, were there any commercial single shot bolt guns? I imagine all of the commercial actions were repeaters. The single-shot was pretty passe at that time.

Spite?  Lol  Grin

Anyone who wants to shoot military bolt rifles in matches can attend CBA military rifle matches. They have a national match also. The rules allow jacketed, plain base or gas checked bullets.

Anyone can also shoot military bolt rifles in NRA high power silhouette or prone or over the course matches.

They may not allow you to use a bolt action schuetzen rifle though.  Sad

That spite can be a real pain.   Angry

KWK, I used to own a Mauser 98 Schuetzen. This rifle is one of two featured in in Jon Speed's 3rd book on Mausers. So far the highest numbered 98 found has been #10. I spoke with Charlie Dell before I discovered Jon Speed and Charlie insisted I must have a 71 although I assured him it was a 98. At that time I wondered why the ASSRA didn't allow a bolt gun since they so had them during the time of Schuetzen matches. As an N-SSA member (since 1967) I've learned that some groups have rules you don't always understand but if you want to play, you abide

Now, I own no military bolts, I don't shoot in ASSRA matches, and I only shoot lead bullets in low pressure revolvers. This isn't about that! This is a struggle for Truth, Justice, and the American Way! (So there.)

Regarding my Quest for TJ&AW (or is it TJ&GW?), is there a copy of the ASSRA Constitution on the site? A quick search left me empty handed.

By the way, in Lady Liberty's headdress, isn't that first spike on the right side a Mauser 71?

KWK,

I like your thinking.

Bugger the rules written by the oppressors who require power over others to inflate their egos - I'll do what Pope did and take my 30 ARMY Hiwall deer hunting!       Grin

If you don't compete or even have a bolt action Schuetzen whats the point of all this ? I suspect just to cause trouble and dissent.

Am out of this discussion it has no purpose.

Your suspicions are wrong! As I stated in the earliest posts of this thread, it's simple curiosity. There's no denying I lack "standing" in lawyer-speak. I'm in the ASSRA for the Archives and the magazine. I take my single shots to the range with friends and family; I don't drive them a 100 miles to an organized shoot.

I didn't locate a copy of the Association's charter on the site. This forum post, not contested, was the closest I could come to a statement of purpose for the Association:

Quote:
To promote fellowship among those interested in the use, study, and preservation of single shot rifles of the type developed between the close of the civil war and the onset of WW1.

I find nothing about action type or country of origin in that statement. If that's elsewhere in the charter, so be it; otherwise, I did have a valid point.

I must admit I see one reason to Ban All Bolts at this time. As I understand it, you can show up for a match with a Ruger single shot, an action developed after WW-I. It's kind-a, sort-a, in a way, more or less like the actions from Britain in the late 1800s. Were the directors to do The Right Thing and allow bolt singles similar to those in Rowe's book, they'd be hard pressed to deny more modern bolt singles. "Oh what a tangled web we weave when first we practice to deceive."
