Stevens Favorite with Cresant Butplate?

Looking at one on Gunbroker. Prety sure it is not factory but a 44 stock modified to fit the Favorite. Comparing the two it looks like if you shortened the front end of the stock carefully it could be made to fit on a Favorite. Opinions?

Slumlord,

If you do some measuring, I suspect you'll find that the Favorite tangs are a bit narrower than the 44 and 44 1/2 tangs.

There are three kinds of men: The ones that learn by reading, the few who learn by observation, and the rest who have to pee on the electric fence and find out for themselves.

It is an interesting looking Favorite;

If you compare the two stocks, they are very close in size. The wrist of the 44 is longer and conceivably could be shortened and fitted to a Farorite action. The upper tangs on both actions are 1/2". The lower tangs are also nominally 1/2", but the Favorite might be a tad narrower.

I just dealt with this problem, I helped my girl friend buy a 1894 favorite. It had a 44 stock adapted to it and the stock had a #2 Swiss butt plate on it.

Yes, the tangs are a little narrower on the Favorite but only by about .040. That didn't look so bad but, If you shorten the stock so that the upper tang is the right length, the lower is still 3/8 to 1/2 to short. I guess you could go the extra and recut to upper tang, too. The LOP is just right for her at the lenght that it was (she's only 5'2"). So if the tang looks like it fits better at the end on the upper tang, that maybe what it is.

I took hers to a local stock maker and had him make a new stock in the same 44 shape with up graded wood to fit the Favorite with the #2 butt plate. It's a very beautiful little rifle now.

I just went and looked at it. The one picture of the wrist area looks like there is no gap in it. So, who ever did it may have done the same as I did. It only cost me $155 with the nice piece of wood to have ours done.

I will say that who ever did the gun liked it very much. It has about $300 dollars in sights on it, if they are originals. From what i've done the price is at this time ($435) a good one.

This is our Favorite. I installed a 510 Remington barrel on it and chambered it with my match chamber. It's 25" long.

The lower barrel is the original with a Lymanl Ivory flip up sight on it. I will have it relined. I have but have not installed a #1A tang sight.

frnkeore, beautiful favorite! Sights on the gunbroker gun look like Stevens sights alright. Front one is missing the knurled windage adjustment knob. The Favorite never came with those sights but you could order most any sights they had on any gun if you wanted to. I will keep watchig it and see where it goes. I need it like I need an extra hole in my head but I allways like the unusual stuff. Gun looks like Stevens could have made it that way even if they didn't.

The Gunbroker Favorite sold for $982. If you could prove the factory built it that way, MAYBE. Although the sights could bring $500+? Neat gun though.
