Reduced Capacity Turned Brass Cases

Print Post

Has anyone experimented using 32-40 WCF reduced capacity turned brass cases ?  I am interested in the proposition that a turned brass cartridge case with external 32-40 WCF dimensions, and a somewhat reduced internal dimension, and a small rifle primer pocket may have some greater accuracy potential over a standard 32-40 WCF case.  Breech seated bullet, of course.

Has anyone tried such an evaluation, for good or for bad and who would be willing to discuss the outcome?

I have used Rocky Mountain everlasting 32-40.  It was originaly used for blackpowder loads.  I have also used it for breach-seating with smokeless.  I notice no difference in the accuracy with smokeless, but much prefer it to regular brass for blackpowder.  I use small rifle and pistol primers in the everlasting brass.

I use the reduced capacity brass I like it as it lets me seat a wad down about .100" off the powder. With a true 32-40 Ballard case you have to use a .33 wad and it will just barely hold that far down the case. As far as small primers I have experimented with large vs small primers and see no difference. I have found larger differences between manufacturers than between large vs small.

I've been in discussion with Dave, and he is going to make up reduced capacity (R.C.) cases and has left it open for me to select the resulting capacity.  Do you know what the "standard" R.C. case volume might be ?

Because your wad goes straight down to whatever depth you determine with the same amount of resistance, does that indicate that your R.C. cases are straight cylindrical now in the interior profile instead of an increasing larger taper towards the head?

I've used RMC everlasting cases. Also made my own everlasting from stainless.  Have also made 32/40 reduced capacity cases from solid brass with a small powder chamber. Have also used both size primers.
I should write a book. Well, a pamphlet. Well, a one page memo?

The fun is doing it yourself rather than reading someone else's experiences.  Your results may be completely different than mine.
Have fun.

    Thanks Much Joe:

What I am struggling with is the design of my Reduced Capacity (R.C.) chamber in the 32-40 Ballard Case.

Did you what your R.C. chamber to be the same as or quite similar to some other standard cartridge ?  What I would like to do is arrive at a 32-40 exterior and a 32 Miller Short interior.  I've done the math in order to reach equivalent volume, but need to work out the linear dimensions.

What was your approach towards reaching your interior case chamber dimensions?  Was it by trial and error ?

Creedmoormatch I am hesitant to post this but you would be better served to get out with what you have and learn how to shoot all the conditions that are presented to you at each individual match that you are able to attend.

I am not sure how long I have been shooting the 32-40 now but it has been a long, long time now and the 32 Miller Short in my personnel opinion in regards to what the 32 Miller Short has to offer over and beyond the 32-40 can be easily made up by practice, practice and more practice.

It has also been my experience when competing against the 32 Miller Short that the majority of the rifles that I have competed against have been what I would consider to be true bench rest rifles in design.

I shoot a Model 52 CPA Stevens ( an offhand design ) off the bench in 32-40 and I have been fortunate to win my fair share of the honors against all the magical cartridge designs, striker actions with a faster lock times etc. due to my dedication and persistence to improve to the best of my ability with what I own, can afford and have in hand to work with.

One has to earn his way to the top through sacrificing what it takes to get one where one wants to be with what he or she has and I can say in all honestly one cannot  buy his or her way to the top I have seen it tried multiple times without success.

john,  you have said volumes in that little short space. i have been shooting various games for about 46 years. most of these competitions have evolved into an equipment race and quickly lost their appeal. when i started shooting schuetzen, i started doing that again and over the last 6 years i have come to the realization of what you said.

it is neat to own several fine target rifles but i have to concentrate on only one and get that one to the best of our ability.

i vaguely remember something about being wary of a man with just one rifle as he just may know how to use it.
those are good words of advice Smiley find one that works and wear it out by pulling the trigger      there was only one magic bullet !

John L.   I am not at all hesitant to post my reply to what I consider a sincere, thoughtful, and very insightful message that you've sent.

You have been very kind in the past to share with me, and others, both your time and your knowledge, all of which I value to the highest degree.  You have demonstrated to this writer, beyond question, your sincerity, straight forwardness,  understanding, and yes, concern for others, which is seldom seen in today's society, much less so in an arena such as a web site forum.

Thank you, John, for your strength and courage to do and say what you believe is the right thing.  I appreciate your counsel.
