Help on 38-55 Loads

Print Post
A friend has a new C. Sharps 1875 rifle being made in 38-55. The chamber and lead are designed to use bullets up to 360 grains or so.

He'll have the rifle in a couple or three weeks and would like to know about loads using bullets of 335 ~ 360 grains. He likes black powder but would also like to know about loads using smokeless.

Any help would be appreciated.

Black fill it up with 2 F I use a thin card wad between the bullet and powder. Settle the powder somehow I tap the case with a brass rod. Weight I get about 41 grs of 2 f in mine.

Smokless use a different bullet one that seats more in the case, to use up air space,  My regular load was 15.5 of 4759 and a 300 gr Saeco. Now using a custom LBT 290 gr and 17.5 of 4227  Heavy bullet start with just a bit less powder. I tailor my smokless loads to shoot to Black powder sight settings

Heavy bullet 38/55's are great shooters

Thanks boats. I'll pass your data on to my friend and I know he'll be happy to have it.

Hi
I bought the same rifle a little over a year ago order it without sights get good ones mine had 30 in badger barrel with Lyman 264Gr. or a Paul Jones 300 gr. bullet It will shoot in an inch at 100 yds. on a perfect day 1.5 the rest of the time at 100 yds. 3f swiss 45 gr. .60 wad or 18 gr. 4227 work best 2f swiss works good too.

From memory, the most common load in the 38/55 at Butte each year, where the 38/55 dominates.  The load is 43 gr Swiss 1.5. A Walters wad. 300 grain bullets being about the average.  That is the most common powder charge and wad.  All the other small details is up to the shooter.

Oh, 20-1, 30-1 seemed to be the most used alloy.

Used for 200 yard OH shooting.

For smokeless loads please have him send me an e-mail and I would be more than happy to share copies of my scanned load development targets along with the load data brought about by my testing of the new Alliant 300MP in the 38-55 and I truly do believe that one would be hard pressed to find a more consistent smokeless powder day in and day out if used properly.

I have a C. Sharps HiWall in 38-55 and it accepts only 2.080 long cases, not 2.125 cases. Might be different on the 1875 but worth asking them.
