28/30 black powder load

I know the 28/30 caliber uses a 120 gr. bullet with 30 gr. of black powder, now my question is how much do I have to reduce the amount of black powder if I use a 136 gr. bullet? thanks, Hank

Hank, if you want to maintain the velocity of 1500fps using 30Gr Fg, I believe you would want to increase, not decrease, the powder charge using a 136gr bullet.  My suggestion would be to use 30gr FFg powder, run a few over the chronograph and see what the readings are.  The grain density difference to FFg will put equivalently more powder in the case

Don't think you will notice the difference. Use all the black powder you can get in the case with reasonable compression. The rifle will tell you how much it likes.

Question: Would FFFG be better for these small calibers? Works better in small caliber ML rifles, burns cleaner.

I tried the FFFg load in my Stevens 47-44 28-30 with breech-seated 120 grainers.  A few of those turned my arm black & blue and gave me some pause in a Stevens 44 action.  I won't do that again.

I started out with FFG (duplex) in 32/40 but, after trying FG I never went back because it was more accurate. My understanding of that was that the FG had a lot fewer "fines" and was more consistent because of it. Along with that, in 50 caliber muzzle loading the FFG was more accurate than the FFFG, again, I believe it was because of the "fines". I even sived the FFG but, it made a big mess and I thought it dangerous, also. If you sive FFFG it might prove consistent in the small calibers.

Just my thoughts on fine powder.
