I've got a #IV and just got in the dies and 24ga CBC brass.  Next case forming.

Anyone loading for smokless?  I have but one load for black.

Looking for loads with 400 to 500 grain bullets.

Hello CW.

Try here:- (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links);
a whole Forum devoted to M-H's in all their forms and manufacture.

Be aware there are a lot of Kyber Pass rifles about that were made there in the local village forge, buy a native who owned a hammer, metal cutting chisel and a file.

Put up pictures and get yours identified correctly, there are also the Gahendra and Nepalese versions. The markings of original rifles are often copied onto the fakes, so a good fake may not be easily recognised at first glance.

I'd be very wary about using anything but Black Powder in these old rifles.

There is also an excellent book called "The Martini-Henry Notebook" which is very well worth owning. Loads of data in that.

Harry

THanks, good reference.

It's a Mark IV - long handle.

Smokeless in these rifles is pretty hard  -mainly due to the large case capacity and the rather radical bottleneck shape of the case.  staying with BP would be my recommendation, that's already hard enough...
Also, the CBC brass is pretty much semi-balloon head, and doesn't have the reserve strength for smokeless and potential overpressure. If your rifle has generous heafdspace, even BP can cause some issues.
If you really want to shoot smokeless, I'd advise you to get some solid-head cases (Kynamco, Bertram, Jamison) - but be lieve me, the rifle works best with BP.

I agree with the 'wimpy-ness' of the CBC cases.

I'm making dies now to draw them down to the right diameter - using the FL size die is too risky - too radical a draw.  I'll do it in several small steps.

Hmmm.  I guess I could always use  5 to 10 grains of Unique and use a round ball to go squirrel hunting!   Grin

There is a youtube video out there on forming cases from 24 gauge shot shells that might be of interest.

I just got my CBE mould this week end, can't wait to set up my casting stuff and give it a try.

Cool.  I'll look for it.

I've ordered (should get here today) a foot of 1-1/4x12 all thread 4140 for making dies/die-holder for sizing down the brass.

Tim.

I have a 577/450 reamer, you are welcome to use it. That's good news.

Bad news is that I won't be home until The second week in May.

Mor bad news, the Reamer is a modern CIP dimension reamer and won't work for original chambers.

Douglas -

I could well use it (in aluminum) for making two holders for brass.  The first, in a 1x1" x 2" long block to hold the cases in the micro-cutoff saw (holds well in the 'vice') for gross trimming; and the second, in a 1" diameter 1-3/4 long piece to hold the brass in my Wilson case trimmer.  No promblemo on time frame.

I've done 6 cases in a row successfully by incremental sizing in the Lee sizing die.  I'm trimming last, not first, to be able to discard the slightly ragged end.
