Stevens 441/2 action
Mar 16th, 2011 at 1:52pm
Print Post
Can somebody tell me the purpose of the screw that runs thru the sides of some 44 1/2 actions just below the barrel channel? It does not appear to hold the barrel in position since there is a screw for that purpose under the barrel. This screw I'm asking about only appears on some 44 1/2's.  Thanks

    Ballard No. 6

The majority of the 44 1/2's by J. Stevens had simple "extractors" operated upon opening the finger lever and correspondingly lowering the breech block.

There was a variation which had an "Ejector" (the .22 R.F. caliber predominantly)  which was similar to the extractor arrangement, but had additionally, a "spring loaded" plunger which rode on the cross screw that you've inquired about and the spent case was ejected by the force of the spring against the cross screw.

He's asking about a screw in the side of the action.  Look at the Stevens 51s on Halps.

Are you asking about the pivot block action or the true falling block.

I believe that our "Westerner" has understood the question differently that what I have.  I don't want to mislead you, so will gladly defer to Westerner's greater wisdom and knowledge than what resides with me.

I have to give credit to Westerner, he knows his firearms !

CMM, if thats how you hold a Bean Burrito to eat it, you may want to attend the schuetzen matches down in San Diego. They go out for Mexican food after the matches.   There was a video and everything.  It's a wild bunch down there!

Joe,  I know you haven't been "back east" since they've built a bridge across the Mississippi (the big Muddy) at Saint Louis, so 2011 might be the time for you to make the trip.

Get your calendar out and look at April 8, 9, and 10th, Fri, Sat and Sun,.  If you have nothing planned for that long weekend, you are hereby invited to attend a pretty nice schuetzen match put on by the Columbia Schuetzverein under the able direction of Chris Christensen.  Three days of fun in the sun (we shoot under cover) with lunch time around the charcoal grill.  No, not hot dogs out of boiling water, but foot long old style Amish butcher man size sausage.  Beer served at the end of each day's competition, cigars and pipes are prevalent amongst old timers.  We take lots of pictures during and after the shoot as evidence !

What do you say ?  Only you can make it happen.    Wink

Later in production, Stevens added an ejector to the rimfire 44 1/2s, much like the 1915 Favorite. That's what that screw is for. ...MIKE...

Something in the back of my memory says the early ones had this screw but I can't recall my source of information.

I have an original 44 1/2 in 32-40 with that screw and it does absolutely nothing.

Ballard6,

Like others, my vote is that you have a 44 1/2 frame set up for an ejector.

CMM,

I was taught long ago that the Big Muddy referred to the Missouri River, and seem to recall that as the Corp of Discovery traveled upstream, they knew when they were still in the main river channel instead of a tributary by the heavier amount of sediment (more mud) that the main channel carried.    Wink
