I want to try shooting black powder in my 45-70s (again), and am wondering if the old Belding & Mull powder measures are OK to use with black powder. thanks, Joe S

And, as an added bonus, the commonly available adjustable brass tube  measures for bulk measure of black powder charges (Treso is one brand) work great instead of the regular B&M measuring tube.  The weights come out almost exactly when using 2F GOEX.

Not so sure one should take anything for granted my understanding is the plastic portion of some of the B&M measures that hold the powder creates static electricity and is very conducive to creating a big boom and serious bodily injury.

The B&M measures that are recommended for black powder do not use any plastic so please do some research prior to possibly hurting ones self.

the b&m measure works great with black   i used one when i started shooting bpcr and the only drawback was the small capacity
i fixed that though by turning a brass fire extinguisher into a large hopper
it holds a lot. i dont use it anymore and could be persuaded to part with it for a princely sum

J. Louis,

BP will not ignite from static electricity generated by reloading tools and activities - lighting strike might do it, but then you're already dead too...
What you have to watch out for is fines and dust, but BP, having lots of carbon in its composition, is a pretty good conductor, hence not liable to ignite from a bit of static electricity.
It is to be avoided though, even if only because it causes the powder to cling like  mad to the hopper....

There is a trick I learned so long ago that I don't remember who tought it to me. For static in a powder measure or anything rub it down good with a dryer sheet. It works like a charm.

Where's the plastic at? I don't have any plastic anywhere on my B&M, but it's an older one. Do the newer B&M have plastic parts?

No plastic on mine either. In the shop we always used a ground strap when there was a possibility of static elictricity.

My B&M is an original. The clear window is plastic , I think.  I've been using all sorts of powder measures for BP since about 1972. The one that works best is my Redding BR measure. I use it in the shop only.  It bothers some people when I use it on the line.  Hasnt blown up once.  I also smoke my pipe when I load BP, in the shop.  I keep telling myself not to do that.

My window is glass.............. how do I know? It's been cracked for over 20 years as well as many others that I've seen.

The only things that I can find on mine are cast iron, steel, brass and glass.
