Another Stevens *Sure Shot*

Went to NGD in Louisville Sat. with the son-in law.  Found a real nice Crack Shot for a real nice price within the first half hour.  Saw a few other Stevens that I was interested in, but the prices were a little to dear.  Things slowed down for the next few hours, then about 2 pm I was visiting with a man and happened to turn around a saw an elderly gentleman holding what I immediately recognized as a  *Sure Shot*.  I must be honest and tell you that I was unable to contain myself.  I stepped over to the man and asked if his gun was for sell and if it was may I see it.  He handed it to me, and I asked him what the piece was worth to him.  Today I am wearing my arm in a sling I reached for my money so fast.  However, he stated he could not sell it to me as the gentleman I had just been visiting with had asked to see it first before I got there.  It seems they had been talking about it and the old man had gone to get it.  I mentioned to that fellow that If he were not terribly interested I was going to buy it.  What worked in my favor was that he was again distracted by someone else asking him a question.  He just nodded to me and said sure go ahead.  So, today I am the new owner of my second *Sure Shot*.

This one is nearly 80-90 % condition.  The wood is beautiful for its age and nearly flawless except for some compression marks.  The nickle is 90%+ and the bluing is very strong with no pitting or roughness anywhere.   The only draw back is that the sights are not original.  They are old (pat. 1891 Lyman folding two leaf which is a correct period) and look okay on the gun, but never the less, not original.  The bore is rough, but I can live with that since it will never be a shooter.

I showed it to several people I know that are knowledgeable about Stevens and was eventually directed to a Stevens collector/dealer with 60 years experience.  He told me that in 60 years he has only seen 4 of these, and that 2 years ago he sold one in comparable condition to a collector in Hawaii for $2200.  That made me feel good about mine.

I now have #19x and 370x.  I am wanting to post pictures for you to enjoy, but I can't find my camera. (Found it)

If anyone has one of these, or knows someone who does, I would like to make contact with them so that I can compare mine to with others.  Perhaps the sights on mine were a special order item and are correct.

The bottom one in these pictures is my recent acquisition.

Good one. I'm not positive, but I believe the name Sureshot came from Sitting Bull calling Annie Oakley, "little miss sure shot" when they both worked Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show. I've seen only 1 in my memory, but then, I've got a safe full of Stevens rifles, never had time for the "boys" rifles.       Enjoy,      ...MIKE...

Made the stupid mistake many years back of passing on one of these because it was in really bad condition. Loose as a goose, bad bore, poor all around. Could have bought it for a little over $100. Knew it was rare but didn't know how rare at the time. Have not seen one in person since and only saw one on line. Still on my want list. Good find!

Great find!  I've been going to gun shows for almost 40 years and have never seen a Sure Shot at any price outside of a book.

I ran across a Side-Plate Favorite one time though, and fully understand your top-of-the-roller-coaster sensation on seeing it.
