J.M. Marlin Ballard 6 1/2

Here is one for the Ballard Boys.

I have two J.M. Marlin Ballard 6 1/2 rifles that show somewhat different characteristics that make me wonder if one of the rifles perhaps has extra order features.

One rifle has finer engraving with more coverage including a game scene on the top receiver flat. The checkering is finer (more lines per inch) and covers a larger area. The stock looks like it could be rosewood, but I don't know how to tell for sure.

Were these differences just the whim of the engraver and stock maker?

Regards,
Bradford

Bradford: Thank you for posting some beautiful rifles. Its quite possible that the answers to your questions are lost in time. Some questions just aren't answerable anymore with having all the records gone to the rifles. I sure would like to know also. That and the full story of all the owners of these beautiful works of art.

WOW!  Love those old Ballards!  I've always heard there are no two exactly alike. Especially in the higher grades like your 6 1/2s.

Very very nice!

Thanks for showing them.

Both of those rifles seem to have special engraving, my 6 1/2 has pretty standard engraving, stamped heart outline & all.  ...MIKE...
