Plus one to Frnkeore.  Mine measures at .042

Yep, thats how I would measure it too.  I'd write it down and loose it though.

With my rifles I use the same procedure when starting. I set my Breech seater .065 ahead of the case then adjust the load. After I have shot it for a while and determined the best load I can find I will tinker with the seating depth dropping it down to .050 and then working my way out in .005 increments until I am happy with the groups. For my 32's that I have the chamber and throating reamers ground for it usually works out to .065 plus or minus .005. I have one 38 that was chambered and throated by Bud Welch that is out to .130 before the groups really closed up.

40 Rod,
Are you saying that the dimension that you use is in front of the case? If so, can you tell us how much of the base band gets engraved?

No arguement from me on Joe L's loading method. He has the results to prove his theory's. I only shoot offhand so no good way to tell what's real good, you can see what's real bad shooting offhand.

It just seems to me you have to start with something and the way the bullets fits is most important governed by both the bullet and individual leade.  How far back the case is brings in another set of variables of lesser importance

My attention is on bullet fit. Guess it's all the years muzzle loading.

I agree Boats. As I get older my interest in BR shooting is on the wane.

These days I much prefer to do my shooting OH.  In fact, this winter I finally have a rifle and mold that lets me take a rifle ammo and spotting scope to the range.  Sorta refreshing to just go do some shooting.

I can still use my Hoch to shoot those 250s and world record small groups.

For starters I put the bullet in backwards push it in tight with a pencil. Then measure the distance from the nose of the bullet to the base of the rim, add the length of the bullet to that measurement. Set your seater at that total length from base of cartridge on your seater to end of plunger and that's it.....
just that easy..

SST that is the Russ Weber method of setting up a seater with the exception of going back a tad from there and moving forward a tad from there for confirmation purposes of it being at the ideal depth setting.

J Louis,
I've looked the thread over a couple of times. I don't seem to find your method. How do you determine the correct distant for your BSed bullet? I'm sure we all would love to know, I know that I would.

Frank the 32-40 & 38-55 300MP test targets were shot using a seating depth of .055 beyond the max. case trim length 2.130+.055 seating depth 2.185 as recommended by Paul Schuttleworth who chambered both barrels.

I was just curious how others determined the ideal seating depth for their individual rifles and the reasons for doing so.

I had a unique experience during load development with my Bresien 33-47 that required some out of the box thinking in regards to seating depth and Quarter Bores method was very similar to mine of which I found to be very interesting.

Keep your eye out for a PM I want to share something with you when I can find the time to sit down and type it all out.

When breech seating, I always start out seating a bullet until about half of the base band is engraved by the rifling.  I may vary my seating later.  With fixed ammo, I seat the bullet out to jam length and play from there.

I guess I'll add my small piece - for what it's worth.

I start by engraving 50% of the baseband.  If the bullet leads the barrel, I push it in deeper until it stops leading.  If the bullet continues to lead, it's time to find another bullet and start over.

Once the bullet seating depth is established, the powder charge is adjusted to achieve the smallest extreme spread; which, in my limited experience, always occurs somewhere between 1450 and 1500 fps average for 32 caliber rifles.

You know Jack, your method is just to simple and straight forward. It'll never catch on.    Grin
