Yes the centre of Christchurch in the South Island has been practically wiped out with confirmed deaths so far of 145 with over another 200 missing.
Specialist search and rescue teams from around the world have flown in to help but not much hope for the missing.

I live in the North Island which was not affected but friends as far away as Dunedin at the bottom end of the South Island felt the tremors.
