Remington Rolling Block..Sporter Or Mid-Range?

Hello, I was told a pistol gripped Remington roller sporter is scarcer than a pistol gripped mid-Range.  I have the big Marcot Remington book, but still confused on how to tell them apart?  Is it based only on brl. markings..P.G., V. W. (pistol-grip, vernier rear, windgage front), as opposed to say E.S. P.G. (rough&ready rear, beach front, pistol-grip)..for sporter?...But book lists that desigination for some Mid-Range also?  At first I thought comb shape was it..sloping for target..but sporters have it too!  Confusing What?

Got to look at caliber in the mix. And there is some crossover in it. Target rifles will have target sights. Hunting/sporting rifles will have sporting or target sights.

Short Range Remington  was in 38Xl and not too powerful cartridges out to 200 yards

Mid Range was up to 50-70 and cartridges from 200 yards out to 600 yards

Long Range was 44-77 or larger out beyond 600 yards

The power of the cartridge make a difference somewhat. A pistol grip stock certainly makes one look closer at it but does it meet the standard in the book for a target rifle, if not then its a sporting rifle.

Hello, Rustyrelx.  Thanks for info.  The original 28" 1/2 Oct. brl. is marked 40  70..there is quite a space between & no dash.  E.S.  & P.G.
Original Beach front & Rough & Ready rear.  Three British proof marks also.  Frame has British proof on L.H. near front frame edge.  Checkered pistol grip with ebony inlay.  Smooth steel buttplate, front sloping comb.  Plain forend with steel cap.  Serial No. 83XX.  Probably considered a sporter?  Thanks again!

To my way of thinking a sporter will have the markings; pg, es, st, etc, a target  comes standard with such things so its unmarked.

Ballards may be weaker,

A target rifle often has higher grade select wood also. But to confuse things a Sporter can be ordered with higher grade wood also.
Rustyrelyx covered it extremely well, but it is confusing at times anyway. Some could go either way, and his mention of standard features for a target gun vs. options for a Sporter is a great point!

Some photos might help our resident experts determine what you have ... and the rest of us would just enjoy seeing another neat old single shot rifle!

First, I have long since stop saying "Remington never did...."
A customer could order nearly any available feature or option on a RB rifle directly from the custom shop.
However, one thing seems to be conspicuous by its absence from all the mid rang (or all) target models, the combination rear barrel sight aka rough and ready. Your rifles features would be more consistent with a sporting rifle than a mid range target.
