Stevens 414 what to look for

Gun show is in town, I almost never go but went by tonight and a dealer I know mostly a  shotgun guy has a 414 Armory model, fitted with what I think is the original Stevens  # 42 wind guage rear sight. It's complete in "attic" condition. Small brass plate on the bottom of the buttstock with a number must have been a club gun.

Going back tomorrow armed with a couple of reference books light magnifying glass etc. He's going to let me brush the bore too.

Any advice on what to look for ? how about prices, I am thinking twice Favorite prices about 1/3 of the same condition 44 1/2 .  500 - 600 if the bore is good ? He just took the gun in trade and has not priced it.

I would look for the usual things. Bore condition, does it lock up tight? Condition of the wood and metal. Modifications? Does it have the original sights? If not it is a minus, but the sight you mention is actualy worth more than the original so it could be a wash. I would jump on any decent one in the price range you are quoting. IMHO good ones usualy bring more than that.

I have a 414 in .22 Short that I bought about a year ago. It has most of the original finish but a few dings in the wood. The bore is like new.I paid a little less than $400.00 for it. I think the .22LR ones go for a little more. Lots of fun to shoot, but the CCI .22 Short Target ammo it likes can be hard to find sometimes.
